I don't know how many people have been surprised to figure out that my name literally means I keep pythons and that it was not something whimsical I came up with. lol (I'll have you know, I'm very good at coming up with cool, whimsical names, but that's ONLY when I'm not actually trying) Anyway, reptiles are practically my obsession and passion. I'm very knowledgeable on them; I also work to educate people about them for the good of both conservation and the rights to own and breed them legally. Currently, I own 3 snakes, my first one which I got over 2 years ago. Of the three, two are African ball pythons and one is a boa constrictor who is a wee baby at the time of this posting. I also have a crested gecko. Even more so, I have pictures! This is my first snake and ball python, Boots. She's very tame; wouldn't hurt a fly and very confident around people. She's my number-one ambassador animal for educational seminars of any sort, and, with one exceptional and abnormal incident, has never bit me and will not bite anyone else. ![]() ![]() My favorite pic of her: ![]() Julias, my other ball python. A bit more timid than my first one, and the only reptile I've had so far that's bit me out of fear. (The only time a snake might ever bite anything they don't plan on eating is if they're afraid of said animal or person. Typically, they're never aggressive animals.) ![]() ![]() older pic of her showing a good majority of her body, and after a bad shed. Also taken outside on a cloudy day ![]() My juvenile New Caledonia crested gecko: ![]() ![]() ![]() And last, but definitely not least, my most recent addition, a photogenic, baby Colombian boa constrictor which I've named Nylah. She has an awesome personality, and I can't wait until she gets much larger. ![]() ![]() literally going after the phone at this point: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I absolutely love them, and I hope you enjoyed these pics of them. :) If anyone else keeps any herptiles, (collective term for reptiles and amphibians) please do share! And if you have any questions you want answered, you're more than welcome to ask me on here or in game. :) Edit: I forgot to mention, but I also may be getting more snakes in the months to come. I'll be sure to share pictures of these as they come, in addition to pictures as my current collection continues to grow. :) Edit2: I actually spelled one of their names wrong. skylamouse a dit : This is something to be a little keen on, but I typically have them in my hands or on my shoulders (especially while playing TFM :D ) when I have them out, although I like to let them wander around the floor in my room occasionally. I'm typically the only one who goes in my room, besides my cats. henkju a dit : Thanks. I like it too. lol May I ask, what eventually made up your final decision to not get a corn snake? I might take some more pictures today or tomorrow. I don't want to bother the snakes while they're digesting their weekly rats. (except Boots. She has decided not to eat for something like 4 months now.) |

Let me tell you a story: Once me and my dad were walking and I saw this big hole in a tree. I asked dad what it was and he said that the tree was rotting in that spot, and he broke off a few pieces of the rotting bark and then, we found a young rat snake or corn snake (we believe a corn snake)! Dad told me to grab a jar and I was like 'ARE YOU NUTS? THAT'S A SNAKE, DAD, IT'S A SNAAAAKE!' (at the time I was freaked out by snakes) But, I didn't say the words out loud and I got the jar as asked, and dad put the snake in the jar. Now, we couldn't afford to keep the snake, so my mom said we could keep it for a day. I decided to name him and I ended up naming the snake 'Chupa' after the legendary beast called 'Chupacobra'. xD And, right before we returned 'Chupa' to his (or her) home, I got to hold him (or her). Now I miss him (or her). I've had a change of heart since that day, now I like snakes. :') |

You have cats? What if you got a new snake, that was very large, and wanted to eat your cats? I'd kill that thing then. No one eats my little Ollie ._. On TV, when I watch shows where people handle snakes, usually they need to handle them with gloves, and a stick thing... In case they get bitten. Do you have to do this with your snakes too? Are any of them real dangerous? Ex. A rattlesnake, because of its venom, and extremely sharp teeth. |

Aaaah. Snakes. I've almost been bit on several occasions by a snake, actually. I was in my friends yard one day, and then I stood still for what-- 10 seconds? There was a snake at my foot. Right at it. Maybe an inch away from biting me, I would say. I screamed "Is this a real snake?" because they would do that to me lmao. Apparently it was real. The second time was when I was in my front yard, and a huge freaking black snake was just slithering around my front yard. I ran inside, contradicted for a good 5 minutes, and went on the computer and searched up how to kill snakes. I got my beautiful shovel, and hit it. It was in the road by then, but I wanted it dead, so. I ran after I hit it cause if it was still alive, nope I wasn't getting bit. I HAVE A BAD HISTORY OF SNAKES. But yours are so cute!!!!! |

olliethekit a dit : I do have cats, and I do know that boas can get big enough to eat cats. That said, a little proper caging (caging with locks for example) will go a long way in keeping the other resident animals safe. I also train my snakes to eat pre-killed food, which sometimes lessens their hunting drive. The ball pythons will never be big enough to eat the cats in the first place, and considering how notoriously picky about their food this species is, I'd be surprised if they considered eating anything else but gerbils and rats. Overall, I'm not really worried about them. At the current size the snakes are, however, it's my CATS that try to eat the snakes! haha All pythons and boas, the main snakes I'm planning on keeping, are nonvenomous. They're just pretty strong. I also do still have snake hooks for if they feel grumpy some day, as well as hemostats and tongs which I use to feed them their weekly dead rats so I don't end up getting bit. I nearly was on the end of a feeding bite one day, and if there's anything a potential reptile keeper should know, is that a feeding bite is *much* stronger and much worse than a defensive strike. I don't watch animals shows on TV anymore. Channels like Animal Planet and NatGeo have gone to hell in a hand basket since around the time Steve Irwin passed away. A majority of their shows now are staged, not about animals, promote animal-hate culture, are run my animal rights radicals, highly factually inaccurate, or even go so far as to mistreat and harm animals. (Source: http://www.motherjones.com/environment/2014/01/animal-abuse-drugs-call-of-the-wildman-animal-planet , http://www.motherjones.com/environment/2014/04/animal-planets-call-wildman-abruptly-canceled-canada , http://melissaasmith.hubpages.com/hub/fatalattractions ) However, there is a cool program on YouTube which is quickly gaining popularity called AnimalBytesTV, which is ran by animal lovers and experts as opposed to the aforementioned TV shows which are ran by greedy and awfully ran corporations. I highly recommend this channel if you're ever interested :) https://www.youtube.com/user/SnakeBytesTV henkju a dit : I just got through moving in a new house, and hauling around the snakes back and forth was a pain in the butt. lol Yeah, I totally understand though. Not the best time to be investing in a pet with such events going on. Dernière modification le 1418133420000 |

I never met a snake Or any type of snake, basically I'm kind of scared shitless about pythons or any boa constrictor Probably because of how massive they are and their ability to just squeeze you to death |

Swirlfire a dit : Bah, they're not that bad. It's only the giant species that are really capable of that, and it's actually quite rare for Boa constrictors to get enormous like the true giants. I don't particularly know why boa constrictors got such a bad rap. I mean, they're quite sizeable, but not to the point where they easily kill people, and many reptile keepers and herpetologists alike do not consider them a true giant among snakes. The giants themselves, also known as the "Big 5" which are Burmese pythons, Northern and Southern African rock pythons, reticulated pythons, and green anacondas, are also not very inclined to constrict people: it would be a waste of energy and potential harm to the snake. Many can be rather tame, occasionally getting overly food aggressive (refer to Pavlov's dogs and the snakes ability to make an incorrect judgment call i.e. they might assume the keeper is a rat so they'll strike before realizing their mistake and backing off) or territorial - all which most often results in just some bites. Others are just nervous, because even giant snakes are afraid of people. Snakes in general have no interest in harming people. They only bite in defense when they're scared, and constrictors only constrict things that 1) they intend to eat or 2) if a big scary animal (in their eyes) had grabbed a hold of their head and won't let go. That all said, no snake currently living today will typically eat people - not even anacondas - or any of the great apes for that matter and if you don't grab their necks like some amateur morons have, you should be fine. Most Booid snakes (pythons and boas) average under 10 feet - a rather safe size so long as you don't try to wear one like a scarf while your drunk. (This happened during the only time some ever EVER was killed by a Boa constrictor. That's right, the only one time a boa inadvertently killed someone.) Pythons and boas are some of the most popular pet snakes in the world, with ball pythons being the most common snake people own. Boa constrictors are often considered the third most popular pet snake, and many actual experts and experienced animal keepers will agree they are actually quite safe to own, provided you're smart and have common sense not to do dumb things with or around them. Boas in particular are quite strong, but not anything too concerning, unlike the real giants which require extra caution and respect. You should meet a nice snake some time. They're quite a joy to hold, and their skin actually feels quite amazing. People always exaggerate things about them, but most of that is just hype or sometimes even completely untrue. |

So I did get some pics of the boa and one of the ball pythons a few days ago before a cold front blew in, but I finally got around to uploading them today. Enjoy! Nylah the boa on my snake hook: ![]() ![]() You can actually see the light going through her eyecap (a transparent scale that covers their eyes) in this pic ![]() The reflection in this shot is just too cool: ![]() Julias: This picture best shows her true colors ![]() But for whatever reason, the color got distorted in these next two pics. Probably because of the evening sun. ![]() Another favorite pic of mine ![]() Boy, do I just love outdoor pics. Dernière modification le 1416148380000 |
