Modern Combat: Sandstorm

Modern Combat: Sandstorm is the first installment in the Modern Combat series developed by Gameloft. It was released in August 2009, and was removed from the App Store in September 2014.

Game Plot (END SPOILED)
American Warrant Officer "Chief"' Warrens returns to active duty in the war against terrorism in the Middle East and reunites with his old squad, composed of soldiers named Dozer, Ryan, Fox, and Jones, the Captain. After completing a training run, Chief is immediately taken with his squad to an area believed to be being used as a terrorist radio outpost. The squad splits up and travels around the area, destroying a number of radio towers, before regrouping in a Palace. Their extraction chopper is shot down by the terrorists, and so they are forced to defend the Palace from a large number of terrorists before being safely extracted in a Humvee. During the mission, the squad notice how the terrorists seemed to be ready for them and begin to suspect the presence of an informant.

The squad are then sent to a hospital in order to capture Abu Bahaa, a terrorist warlord, who is apparently undergoing an unspecified surgery there at the time. Chief and Dozer infiltrate the hospital through the sewer system below, while Ryan and Jones wait outside. Ryan is killed in this mission. Upon reaching Bahaa's room, Chief finds that they have been tricked; the hospital has been rigged with explosives and a dummy corpse has been placed in Bahaa's hospital bed. However, he and Dozer manage to escape unscathed, while also protecting Jones, who has been wounded.

After Jones recovers, the squad break into a dockyard which Bahaa is using to conceal a nuclear weapon. They discover that the terrorists actually have an enormous base underground, the entrance hidden within a shipping container. Chief is sent in to find the nuke - he encounters Bahaa inside, but is forced to leave him in order to locate the bomb, which could be detonated by the terrorists any minute. He eventually finds the nuke and is able to secure it, while Bahaa flees outside and attempts to escape in a truck. The squad pursue him in a humvee, chasing him out of the dockyard and through a train tunnel, before eventually managing to flip his truck just as he reaches the highway.

The squad find Bahaa lying by the truck, still alive, and Dozer prepares to capture him; however, Jones betrays the squad, killing Dozer and taking Fox hostage. Bahaa taunts Chief, saying that he is weak and that he has no choice but to surrender, but Chief shoots Jones, who falls to the ground with Fox. Bahaa pulls two Fragmentation grenades from his jacket and prepares to blow up both Chief and himself, but Fox pulls him to the ground and tells Chief to run. Chief takes cover by the Humvee as both Bahaa and Fox are consumed by the explosion.

For all of his efforts, Chief is promoted and becomes known as a hero. He travels to Fox's residence and meets his wife, informing her of his act of martyrdom and how he saved his life.

Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus

Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus is the sequel to Modern Combat: Sandstorm, and the second major instalment in the Modern Combat series developed by Gameloft.

Gameplay in Modern Combat 2 is similar to that of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Players control their character with onscreen controls, the layout of which can be changed. The player can also crouch, throw grenades, use their weapon's iron sights, reload, change weapon, pick up different weapons, knife enemies, mantle obstcles and shoot using buttons and prompts on the touch screen. In addition, players can now customize the placement of the on-screen controls to better suit their preferences. The graphics have advanced slightly over Modern Combat: Sandstorm, with a slightly increased polygon count, though the same engine is used. The single-player campaign also boasts new Quick-Time Events to add a new level of excitement to the gameplay.

Game Plot (END SPOILED)
The game starts with the player taking control of Mustang Squad's Private Newman, who is imprisoned in a prison camp operated by Pablo al-Banni. Newman is questioned by Pablo through a Translator before he is knocked out with a rifle butt to the head. Fellow squadmate Private Downs rescues Newman, and then they attempt to make an escape. After Downs knocks out a guard unaware that the prisoners are free, Newman acquires an NX8 Handgun and later an AK-47, and the two attempt to fight their way out of the compound.

The game then enters a flashback following Lt. "Chief" Warrens, the player's character from Modern Combat: Sandstorm, and Delta Squad. They assault an oil rig in the Middle East to find Khalis Ghazi, who is believed to be a member of the terrorist organization established by Abu Bahaa. The player clears rooms of enemies and fufills various objectives until he is attacked by Ghazi himself, who is promptly disarmed by the player. While they wait for extraction, Ghazi is coerced into revealing his superior's identity.

The player then takes control of Sergeant Anderson, a member of Razor Squad. They escort Azimi, ambassador of an unidentified Middle Eastern country, to the United States embassy using a Humvee The player moves from rooftop to rooftop, eliminating various enemies and the occasional tank, until the Humvee and the player are funneled into a courtyard, where they are ambushed by waves of enemies and tanks.

The player then takes control of a mounted gun on the Humvee they just escorted as they travel to the American Embassy, battling waves of enemies, troop-carrying trucks, and a helicopter.

Next, the player sneaks through a snowy landscape littered with the remains of a wrecked airliner to reach a derelict power plant where Ghazi's boss,Nikitich is hiding. Mustang Squad finds him attepting to flee in a tank and are forced to engage him, resulting in the tank being disabled and Nikitich revealing the location of his superior, Popovich. The squad leads an assault on the Cold War Compound where he is holed up, methodically searching each room in the bunker until Newman and Downs end up confronting him on his Soviet submarine. However, Popovich deftly turns the tables and captures the two, shipping them off to Pablo's jungle compound.

The player then resumes the storyline where they left off after the ambush in the first mission. They flee through the jungle, fighting off Pablo's men as they escape through the ruins. During a brief pause, they contact the rest of Mustang Squad and are directed to an extraction point, where they are picked up in a Huey. The player then takes control of Sgt. Anderson and are ordered to assist in the assault on Pablo's mansion. The player attempts to sneak in, but is discovered and are forced to revert to an all-out assault. The team breaks into Pablo's office, where they find Pablo's translator, who claims he has no loyalty to Pablo and points the player in the direction Pablo ran off in. However, as the player enters the elevator they were led to, a massive explosion throws the player into the elevator's wall, and Rollins is killed. The player is forced to chase Pablo on foot through the local shantytown, fighting off the local militia forces and another Mi-24 Hind, eventually leading to a fistfight with Pablo on his Huey, and ending with the player forcing a grenade into Pablo's mouth and pulling the pin.

Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation

Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation is the sequel to Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus. It is the fourth installment of the entire Modern Combat franchise.

Gameplay in Modern Combat 3 is similar to that of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Players control their character with a virtual joystick on the left side of the screen, while looking around the game's environments is controlled by swiping or dragging on the screen. The player can also crouch, throw grenades, use their weapon's iron sights, reload, change weapon, pick up different weapons, knife enemies, mantle obstacles and shoot using buttons and prompts on the touch screen. In addition, players can now customize the placement of the on-screen controls to better suit their preferences. Modern Combat 3 features a powerful new engine, allowing for many new features that have never been seen in a mobile shooter before, such as a proper class-based multiplayer, customizable weapons and kill signatures, Military Support, and significantly improved graphics over Modern Combat 2.

Game Plot (END SPOILED)

Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation takes place between 2028 and 2030. The game starts with the player taking control of Corporal James Walker riding in Echo 9 over the KPR-controlled city of Los Angeles. After a brief cutscene, the player is shown how to use their weapon by eliminating a group of KPR infantry and a helicopter on the roof of the National Security Agency building. The player then fast-ropes into the building and fights their way to a computer console to download essential data, aided by Echo-Nine, Private Colt and Private Kelly. After collecting the data, Walker and the others move to be picked up by Echo-Nine, only for the extraction chopper to be shot down, as Colt and Kelly board, killing Colt and Kelly. Corporal Walker is forced to fight down to the building's lobby and through the streets, aided by Captain Turner and various allies, until a suitable landing zone for allied helicopters is found. After defending against wave of enemies, allied aircraft arrive and extract James Walker, Captain Turner and the intel.

The player then takes control of the weapons aboard an AC-130 gunship in the eyes of Master Sergeant Carter, assisting gound forces as they attempt to slow the advance of K.P.R. forces by destroying vital bridges. The player then resumes control of Corporal Walker and assists in an assault on a local radio tower. The player pushes uphill and through expensive homes, eliminating enemy infantry and Anti-Aircraft Guns, and culminating in a firefight at the top of the hill, where Captain Turner is killed in an explosion.

The locale then switches to Alaska, where Walker and Sergeant Downs attempt to rescue members of Razor Squad. After fighting their way into a large Alaskan village and nearly avoiding capture, Walker and Downs succeed in rescuing the Razor Squad members, one of whom turns out to be Sergeant Anderson. The squad makes their escape in a stolen pickup truck, with Walker defending the team in the bed of the truck.

Next, the player assists in the infiltration and assault on the Yongwang, or the Dragon King of the Sea, an aircraft carrier manned by KPR forces. The player parachutes down and sneaks aboard the vessel, only to be forced to abandon stealth as they move through the interior of the ship. During the search for intel, the player comes across fifth-generation Russian prototype stealth fighters, which the team decides to steal. The player moves across the flight deck to assault the bridge, where they encounter and kill Captain Sung and the bridge crew. Afterwards, they return to the fighters and fly them back to be studied by American forces.

Immediately afterward, the team is deployed to sabotage a weapons factory, and are successful. This was critical in disrupting the flow of vehicles and supplies to the KPR forces in the field.

The next mission, Raging Bird, again takes place with Master Sergeant Carter, this time as a door gunner on board a Black Hawk. The player rides through the valleys of Pakistan, destroying multiple enemy encampments and a large wooden bridge before the aircraft is shot down and Carter and the crew are killed. The viewpoint then switches back to Walker as he moves up through the starting area and witnesses Carter and his aircraft go down. Walker, Anderson, Downs and Washington fight their way to the crash site, only to discover that there are no survivors. Walker and Washington attempt to continue their search for the traitor Edward Page, but Page wounds Washington with his sniper rifle. After moving tactically up to the building where Page had holed up, Walker engages Page in hand-to-hand combat. Walker is nearly overpowered by the grizzled veteran, but Downs and Anderson show up and subdue him. Page reveals the location of the airfield where the attacks on the American coast are being coordinated from. The team is immediately sent in to neutralize the airfield.

The team infiltrates the airfield, neutralizing a missile battery along the way. After fighting their way to the control tower, Walker and Anderson confront general Tong at the top. After breaking free of Tong's men, Walker kills the General. After Tong revealed that the KPR's arsenal of WMDs are ready to be launched at the United States, the team is quickly deployed to Kijang, a North Korean village to secure them. However, the village is a trap, and the team is captured and taken to the launch facility to be interrogated. However, the team breaks free and attempts to shut down the launches. When Popovich prevents the team from shutting down the last missile's launch from its computer console, Walker sabotages the missile itself with C4. As the player pursues Popovich outside the facility, and engages him in a vicious firefight, the damaged missile falls nearby, and the resulting explosion devastates the area and knocks Walker unconcious. When he awakens a few moments later, Popovich has recovered, and is beating the injured Downs. Walker engages Popovich in hand-to-hand combat, and manages to kill him by skewering the Russian on a sharp length of exposed pipe. As a flight of Blackhawks appears to rescue the player, Downs casually inquires about needing a drink after all the excitement.

Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour

Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour is the fifth instalment in the Modern Combat franchise. It was unofficially announced on September 21, and was released December 6th, 2012.

Gameplay in Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour is similar to that of Call of Duty: Black Ops II. The player can control their character with a virtual joystick on the left side of the screen, while looking around the game's environments is controlled by swiping or dragging on the screen. Players can also crouch, throw grenades, use the weapon's iron sights, reload, change weapon, pick up different weapons, knife enemies, mantle obstacles and shoot using buttons and prompts on the touch screen. The knifing feature has changed compare to the previous games. In the game in which when a player comes close to an enemy, the fire button switches to a melee button. Graphics has significantly changed compared to Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation. Ground sliding has been significantly shorter compare to sliding in Fallen Nation. Military Support has completely changed as a new feature to the franchise. The military support has been reduced to 3 during multiplayer gameplay but is also customizable in the armory. There are 9 available kill streaks in military support. In multiplayer, players now buy weapons instead of unlocking them when they rank up. Players can also jump over any recognised obstacle which is also a new feature in multiplayer.

Game Plot (END SPOILED)
Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour takes place in the year 2037.[1] The game starts when the US send a large army to a summit to secure it. While Page is underway to Hawaii, Corporal Joel Blake arrives at the Red Summit with a small squad of US soldiers, led by Lieutenant James Walker, the protagonist of Fallen Nation. They storm their way through the beach, and receive word that another allied team is pinned down by the SGS Militia. The team make their way to them, and discover that the president of the United States has been taken hostage by Edward Page, the client of SGS.

The game then switches to the perspective of Edward Page (a supporting antagonist from Fallen Nation) two days prior to the invasion of Hawaii, attacking the WCIB in Seattle as a distraction of a large attack on the C3 summit in Hawaii. Saunders Global Security (SGS) is a group of mercenaries who are hired for the security of the summit. After Page and Everett Saunders plant bombs on the WCIB, they are extracted via helicopter, just as the building explodes inches below their feet.

Anderson (a supporting character in Fallen Nation) is dispatched into a devastated Seattle, along with several other AFTER operatives, to head to a police station. Chief (likely Warrens) tells AFTER operatives that terrorists have been spotted all over the city. Making his way to the WCIB, Anderson, along with Caydan Phoenix (the main character of Blackout) rescue the AFTER operatives that were being held hostage by SGS. As Chief tells Anderson that terrorists are using vans to transport hostages, he leaves Cayman Phoenix and the secured hostages, continuing by himself. As Anderson battles his way onto the street dominated by SGS forces, a van screeches from a corner and onto the street. Anderson kills all of the SGS forces, and catches up with the van, largely caved in by debris from a section of the tunnel that has collapsed. An SGS soldier leaps out from behind a piece of fallen debris, and pulls out a knife. However, Anderson retaliates and shoves the knife into the SGS soldier's abdominal hemorrhage. Just before death, a sputtering SGS soldier says that the attack on Seattle was all a distraction for Edward Page to abduct the US President in Hawaii.

The game switches back to the perspective of Edward Page, as he takes the president hostage in the Iakoo Beach Resort. As Page assists other SGS soldiers, he and the SGS soldiers successfully place a bomb inside the resort. Afterwards, Page ruthlessly plants IEDs all around the resort, in an attempt to slow down the pursuing US forces. Phantom Unit pursues Page. While they disarmed the bomb, Page had almost reached his helicopter. Therefore, they were unable to rescue the President.

Intel confirms Everett Saunders (a former US Special Force in the same unit with Page) is somewhere in the city of Barcelona, so Walker, Blake and Lieutenant Downs (a major NPC in Black Pegasus and Fallen Nation) are dispatched to find him and extract information on where Page may have taken the president. They locate Saunders and try to arrest him, but Blake needs to throw him off a balcony to save Walker, and Saunders is thought to be dead.

The team is then sent to the SGS base in South Africa. Upon attacking the base, Blake is knocked out of his helicopter and forced to fight his way through the base alone. He rescues the president and then reunites with Walker and Downs. The president retrieved information indicating that Page is holding up in a base in Antarctica. The team is dispatched, and discover that Page plans to fire a bioweapon capable of killing about 4 billion people, in an effort to "restart" the human race.

Warning: spoiler below. Move cursor to read the text.
After fighting their way through the Antarctic Unified Citizens base and locating a biolab, they realise that the biolab that they are in contains the bioweapon that is capable of killing 4 billion people. Anderson and Blake are ordered to wait for a hazmat team to arrive, however, Anderson disobeys orders. He orders Blake to open the door leading into the room where the bioweapon canisters are. Blake does so, but Anderson pushes Blake off his feet, and rushes into the lab, breaking the electronic lock so no one can enter, and begins planting bombs on the bioweapon canisters. However, Anderson is attacked and stabbed by Page whilst planting the bombs. Before he dies, Anderson tells Blake to detonate the bombs. Blake does so, with the blast killing Anderson and incapacitating Page. When Page regains consciousness, he finds that US soldiers are breaking into the base and are destroying his bioweapon. Realising that he is defeated, an enraged Page fights his way through the base and attacks Downs and Walker, shooting Downs in the arm and fighting with Walker.
Page overpowers Walker and is about to kill him, however, Blake kills Page, and he and Walker assist Downs in fleeing the building before it blows up.

In a post-credits scene, it is revealed that Saunders is alive. He states that he was using Page all along, and that he has already put in motion the first part of a terrorist attack of his own, claiming that soon they "will soon know the true meaning of terror".

Modern Combat 5: Blackout

Modern Combat 5: Blackout is the sixth edition in the Modern Combat series. It was released on July 24, 2014 and is the first game in the series developed by Gameloft Bucharest.

Though similar to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, gameplay in Modern Combat 5: Blackout is different from previous Modern Combat games. Compared to previous games, it is more focused on levelling up and earning better weapons and attachments rather than tactical gameplay.

As always, players can crouch, sprint, throw grenades, aim, reload their weapons, jump over obstacles, knife enemies, change and pick up weapons. An entirely new feature to the franchise is that the player is able to choose a soldier class out of 5 classes. Each soldier class has their own different perks and weapons.

Game Plot (END SPOILED)
The protagonist in Blackout is Caydan Phoenix (a minor character from Modern Combat 4). Some other characters who play a big part in the campaign include Sophie Daviau and Isaac Tukura. The campaign begins with a cutscene, in which Phoenix and Daviau discuss current events in Gilman HQ, Tokyo. One month previously the World Liberation Army had launched a surprise attack on Venice, Italy, and a week after that an attack on several Asian networks. Phoenix tries to convince Daviau that the attack on Venice was a cover-up for something greater, but Daviau does not believe him. The cutscene ends, and the game begins as a flashback, with Phoenix and Jonathan Taylor infiltrating Venice as part of a Gilman Security Special Forces Unit.

After moving through the buildings of Venice, shooting WLA soldiers, Phoenix and Taylor hijack an enemy boat. They escape through the Grand Canal, gunning down enemy boats and helicopters with a mounted turret. After the mission ends, another cutscene begins with Phoenix and Roux continuing their conversation. Phoenix further tries to convince Daviau that something big is about to happen, even insinuating that Gilman Security is involved, but before Daviau can respond the room they are in is attacked. Phoenix blacks out, and Daviau calls Tukura to rescue him.

Phoenix wakes up a month later in Rinnoji Temple, Japan. The temple has been converted into a makeshift hospital, and is under the control of the Raiders. It is the first day of the International Summit on Cyber-Security, and Tokyo has become a battleground. Miku Kubo leads Phoenix out of the building, where he meets up with Tukura and Andrews and heads towards downtown Tokyo.

Immediately after reaching downtown, the truck in which the group is traveling in is ambushed by the Raiders. Phoenix tries to hold them off using the 50 Caliber mounted on top of the vehicle, but eventually the truck is flipped. Tukura drags Phoenix away from the wreck just before it explodes, killing Andrews. They venture into the city on foot, gunning down every enemy in their way. In addition to Raiders, they also combat Gilman Security tricopters, drones that have been instructed to fire upon everyone. Eventually, they reach a safehouse. Once in the safehouse, Phoenix grabs a sniper rifle, climbs to the roof, and begins defending the building from the swarming Raiders.

After a couple minutes of sniping, an Apache helicopter appears and launches a rocket at the building. The explosion blows up part of the roof, causing Phoenix to fall off. On the ground, Phoenix reenters the building and continues holding it off against the Raiders. Soon he is joined by Daviau and Hawk, and they bring the battle outside to the courtyard. After clearing the area of enemies, Phoenix and Hawk head out towards downtown Tokyo to place jammers for countering the enemy.

Daviau and Phoenix meet at Daviau's office, where she tells Phoenix that he is officially dead to protect him and his daughter. She plays a comm log between Taylor and Everett Saunders. Taylor asks Saunders for "the money" and Saunders makes an appointment on a remote construction site in Tokyo the next day. Phoenix and Daviau are to stop the exchange.

From this part, in the chapter "San Marco", the player will experience what really happened in Venice.

Phoenix, Bull, Hawk and an unknown character are in a helicopter flying over Venice. The unknown character manning the machine gun is shot, and Bull tries to help him, but before he can the helicopter shifts and the man's body flies out of the heli. Phoenix almost falls out, but is pulled back in by Bull. Phoenix takes over the machine gun and defends the chopper from a barrage of enemies. After reaching their destination, Phoenix and Jonathan Taylor jump out of the helicopter, diving into the Grand Canal. Gunning through even more enemies, they secure "The Package", chemical weapons the UN has been storing in Venice. During extraction the helicopter is shot down, and Phoenix lands in the water, and Bull helps him into a boat.

The Chapter "Ryogoku" begins.

Phoenix and Hawk are sent on a mission to kill Bull, a corrupt Gilman Security personnel, working for Everett Saunders. As the pair approach the ambush point, they are attacked (never saw that one coming) by Gilman personnel working for Saunders and by drones. Phoenix extracts information from Bull's and Saunder's conversation, and then kills Bull. The duo makes their escape and are extracted.

The Chapter "Gilman HQ" begins.

Phoenix and the rest of his team infiltrates Gilman HQ. The building is heavily damaged by raiders, but the security is still present. After clearing out the lobby, they are sent to recive the information about Gilman's activities in the server room, however they lose Hawk in the process. After hacking into the system, Tukura and Phoenix make their escape on the rooftops of Gilman HQ. Only meeting Everett Saunders, shortly afterwards. Phoenix shoots down Saunder's helicopter in retalitaion for lossing their extracting chopper. At point blank range, the two rivals fight for one last time, only for Phoenix to come out victorious, and thus, ending Gilman's illegal activities.

The game concludes with Phoenix with his daughter, Lily. And Deviau discusing about the fall of Gilman Security and his business partners. However Phoenix recivess an urgent message about unexpected uprisings in the world.
