Welcome to Divided. My first go at posting non-Transformice fiction here, so let's go.

"Divided" (which is a working title because it feels dumb to me) is the story of Meilin Zhang (who chooses her English name to be "Olivia"), a teen girl from rural China who comes to America to avoid working for her family's farm. Working in a Chinese restaurant outside of New York City, she meets an Italian boy named Dante who sweeps her off her feet.
But there's a little issue: Meilin's English is poor at best. She can read some, but the only words she can utter are those in the English handbook her hiring agency hands her.
But Dante, eager to communicate with the girl, notices the cell phone in her pocket and points at his, before writing five little words down on a napkin that set the whole thing off: give me your phone number?

I'll be adding more as I see fit, I'm hoping to go slowly with this project and take my time and not rush it. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy the idea of it. :)

It was an overcast day when Meilin Zhang decided to make her journey to America. To say she was nervous was quite the understatement -- here she was, only sixteen years of age, making a continental journey from her homeland to a foreign land, a land she had only heard about from books and television. Being from rural China, all she knew was farm work, and she was tired of it.

So one night, in early May, Meilin snuck out of her family’s old home and to a nearby city to get a bus to Beijing. It had been her first time ever being in a big city, and she wanted to take all of it in at once. Despite it being almost four in the morning, so many things were still open. Hotels, bookstores, restaurants. She had never seen so many lights before, ever, and she found herself impressed by the sheer amount of them.
But she had to keep her head, and in this case she needed to keep her mind on the fact she needed a place to stay for the night. As much as she wanted to drop in on the agency in the middle of the night and get her life started, it just wasn't viable.

She found a ratty looking motel on the outskirts of the city, in a dimly lit area where it seemed she was the only girl not wearing tall heels and soliciting "services," and slipped inside; asking for a room with one bed and the location of the ice machine. Once she received the card to unlock the door, she made her way to her room, laid down on the bed, and promptly passed out for the next few hours.

"So this will be your first job?"
Meilin eagerly nodded in response. The man she was sitting across from was a short, chubby man with a salt and pepper goatee and a coif on his head to match. He had introduced himself as Guowei Jiang, and was the owner of the Jiang Hiring Agency; an agency that her best friend Fang had told her about shortly before she made her own trip to America.

It's so great, Meilin! read one text after Fang arrived in New York, shortly before she was sent off to her destination restaurant somewhere in some American state that began with M. Everyone is so nice and friendly. I hope you can do this too!

She was caught up with the illusion of the American lifestyle now. Guowei had shown her some stories of other people who he had hired, who had gone on to live happy lives in the country; having control of their own businesses or becoming chefs or having their English perfected enough they could become translators. The girls had sent pictures of themselves to him, alongside their testimonials, and they were dressed in flashy clothes with lots of gems and necklaces around their necks; the kinds of clothes that Meilin only saw in magazines at the local corner mart, that cost so much yuan she couldn't afford it in her wildest dreams. Was all this possible, just by going to America?
Without thinking twice, she signed the contract, and took his hand and shook it when he offered; then slipped her jacket on and left the office, elated that in forty-eight hours she would have a one-way ticket to the United States.

When she walked into her hotel room, she wanted to collapse again, much like she had in the morning, but right as she went to sit down on the bed, her breath hitched. A brown-coloured rat had decided to make a home out of the pillows, crawling all over one before sinking it's teeth in. She slapped an open palm across her mouth to stifle a high-pitched scream, while running backwards towards the door. At this point her eyes were fluttering from one side of the room to the next. It was in this moment she realised how poor the conditions were and how dingy the room looked. Wallpaper seemed to be peeling from the corners, and the blinds covering the window seemed cracked and yellowed. She had been so tired the night before she laid on the bed and fell asleep and really hadn't cared what it looked like, but now that she could see clearly, she was thankful she'd only be here a couple days.
But for now, all her mind was on was her little visitor; which was now making it's way to the edge of the bed to jump off of it and go God knows where.
Well, if this is what it takes to be a grown up, I guess I have to deal with it. Her thoughts echoed in her mind as she collected herself and opened the door behind her, deciding it would perhaps be a good idea to go out for a bit.

When Meilin came back to the hotel, she pulled her keycard out and grimaced as she opened the door up. Scanning her surroundings as she slowly walked inside, she breathed a sigh of relief once she realised that the room -- for the moment -- was vermin free. But as she turned her television on, the fear came over her again. It was bound to be lurking somewhere, right?
Calmly she collected her things, and made a move to leave the room permanently. She probably wouldn't have been able to sleep tonight anyway, regardless of where she was.
The excitement of her new life was intensifying.
