This is not the first time this happend but I've quite frankly had enough. Today I got muted for 3 hours for saying this. [Lazaar] Super Giga Kawaii Gay Bois Tribu is love Super Giga Kawaii Gay Bois Tribu is life. The mute message I received for this was [~Moderator] You can not talk for 3 hours. Reason: please dont use homophobic slurs, even if they are tribe names. [Lazaar] Super Giga Kawaii Gay Bois Tribu is love Super Giga Kawaii Gay Bois Tribu is life Please note that "Super Giga Kawaii Gay Bois Tribu" is a tribename and that a message about love is probably not meant to offend someone. I didn't spam or behave bad in any way. Annoyed by this I contacted Makinit and had this conversation which led to me being unmuted. < [13:09] [Makinit] can you please tell that secret mod/arb that's lurking in en 3 that gay is not a homophobic slur and saying a tribe name is NOT grounds for a 3 hour mute > [13:18] [nl] [Makinit] it was indeed to long but please watch what you quote or mention in public chat < [13:18] [Makinit] How is it reason for a mute at all? Gay is NOT a homophobic slur even more so there is no homophobic context whatsoever > [13:20] [nl] [Makinit] you are right < [13:20] [Makinit] thank you [~Moderator] You can not talk for 0 hours. Reason: A few minutes later in chat I got asked why I got muted to which I replied that I got muted for saying [Lazaar] Super Giga Kawaii Gay Bois Tribu is love Super Giga Kawaii Gay Bois Tribu is life. Another couple minutes later I got muted with this reason [~Moderator] You can not talk for 1 hours. Reason: provocation Please note that I didn't behave badly in any way, the only thing I did was stating for what I got unjustly muted. I also didn't spam it, I replied exactly once. All my other chat was greeting some people. The worst thing is that it's incredible hard if not impossible to fight against these unjust mutes by invisible mods because you can't directly whisper them to question their methods. Other mods, most of the time, even if they agree with you, will just tell you to wait it off. That is, if you manage to find a mod online whos willing to talk. Yeah, this is ridiculous. A CCM needs to look at the mute history and deal with this at once. When considering you're talking about a tribe, which if I recall correctly is primarily LGTBQIA+ and allies, it's more insulting to them that you mute for mentioning it than the tribe name itself is (and there's nothing offensive at all about the tribe name). People, or in this case - moderation, shouldn't assume what offends the community unless it's a genuine slur. (ie: you're a f--, et cetera) |

Locking this in advance to avoid arguing, I'll edit this post when I've typed out my response. (Long time taken to edit, I'm a slow typer. Apologies ;;) So while I was not present when any of this was going on, it's pretty obvious that this wasn't handled properly. There shouldn't be a situation where someone is muted for something, un-muted after an appeal and then muted once again over the same thing. It was mis-communication as well as based off assumptions, and it shouldn't happen again. Nevertheless Zou will be informed about this, and as far as the confusion goes I apologise on behalf of the team. As far as the mute goes, I don't have logs of the exact chat or anything so it's not my place to say if the mute was justifiable or not, however I would like to clarify why staff mute for using the word 'gay'. While I understand 'gay' isn't always used in a negative term anymore and that it's perfectly possible for people to have respectful conversations using the term, it is still prominently used as an insult against homosexual people with the intent of being emasculating. There's no denying that. When it comes to giving out sanctions, staff try and check the context of what is said first before handing out a sanction since we understand that not every case may deserve one. We do tend to give out mutes in situations when there is little to no context or if it's not clear beyond any reasonable doubt of the intent of what was said since it is common for people to try and intend to be insulting or negative while claiming that they never intended the use of that term negatively when caught. Hence why warnings and low sanctions are given out in these circumstances. In short, we cannot accept 'It's not offensive/discriminating since I don't intend it to be so' as absolute reason to allow free reign of use of these terms. Everyone needs to be treated equally when it comes to sanctioning. Young children regularly play on Transformice who aren't always able to distinguish differences in terms or expressions, nor should they be expected to deal with such chat in the same way as adults do. I hope that helps clear things up. In the end this entire event was a bit of a mess and it shouldn't happen again, however please be mindful in the future that using 'gay' can still lead to a sanction regardless of how it is used, just like any other racial, sexual or religious slur/insult will be. It's not meant to imply that you are these things, it's meant to discourage the use of these words negatively and prevent discrimination and abuse. If anyone want to discuss anything about this they are free to send me a private message about it. I'm about to head to bed but i'll reply as soon as I can. |
