::Chapter 9 “Nostalgia”

It was as if time froze in the old base of operations. When Dakota sprinted out of the tunnel, the weather was wonderful. Late May, she believed. Hiding in the shadows of trees and other greens Dakota reached campsite. Walking up to the bar wired gates, she waved at Siiri sitting in one of the towers. klick klick, beeeeep. The gate drove to the side with a little rattle. The sniper girl tumbled down the tower's stairs to Dakota.
"Where's Raw and Ama?"
"They're keeping watch in the old base."
"Is the coast clear? Why didn't you use the mic?"
"There appears to be poor reception down there."
"Yeah yeah, go tell B-7." With that, Dakota moved on to the main building and control room and Siiri back to her post.

"It's clear huh...That's good." Mitsuki's pencil tapped on the table.
Tap tap tap.
"Should we start moving instantly?" Lyra spoke up.
Tap tap tap.
"Yes." Mitsuki stood up, the chair shooting back violently. "Weapons and supplies. We don't need anything else."
"What about the helicopters?" Lyra questioned. They wouldn't be able to get anywhere without helicopters, right?!
"Will be taken care of." Dakota backed away from the room and walked over to her tent to start packing,
Raw's voice was buzzy, but they could hear her. So far it's been dead quiet and no enemy in sight. Supposedly it was good, but at the same time a bit eerie. Why was the base left in such a hurry? The reason isn't known, but mice speculate on and on. Soon the transporting was in full swing. Ama and Raw with the help of other engineers figured out a way to get everything they needed to the base. Even if it on first sign was bad, the technology was top-notch. Somehow they managed to bring electricity back to this place. Mitsuki doubted they would be able to do that, but it happened. Now lights were lit and everything powered by electricity was...supposedly working. This base had been abandoned since the city was bombed. Why, though? It was still in good shape back then.

"Left, left, okay go!" A worker waved with his arms, signalling the others to bring in one of the helicopters. Everything went quite smooth and by the end of the day half of the things were transported from the campsite. Nobody gets any rest though. Only 30 minute breaks and then you go to work again. The database had been saved unharmed. Miracle? Perhaps. Not really. This place is inaccessible through anything but the sewers and the tunnel, which was now going to be blocked. The old operations base slowly started gaining a cozier atmosphere, as it became more and more filled with things. Now it was only to pack up. Another tiring thing, but now the campsite was empty. Database copied and deleted from the control room. Invaders may hack it, but it'll be blank as a canvas. Mitsuki was absentmindedly tapping his pencil on the table again. This isn't going to be pretty, he thought. We'll drive the invaders out whatever the cost may be! It's been five years! Unacceptable! Were Freedom Fighters really that badly equipped or were their skills rusty? There's no time to think of it. There's still work to do.

The next day was just as sunny as the last one. May, oh May. Summer is soon here. How would it affect them, or the invaders? 'Onestly they seemed so prudish that they'd never go out on a mission in this heat, unless that crazy German aviator woman wouldn't force them. Was there a bigger organisation behind this? It was just to carry on and find out. Mitsuki swore to drive them out and vanquish the tribe forever, might it cost his or his comrades' lives. Is this what they call heroism? Courage? Mitsuki was still absentmindedly tapping his pen on the table, until Siiri set down a cup of coffee in front of his face.
"You look tired." She said and proceeded to walk towards Raw and Dakota sitting on the couch. Mitsuki's only response was a little nod when he picked up the cup. Maybe this wasn't such a bad decision after all? Again, you'll never know until you find out, and how you find out is up to every individual to decide. Fluty peered at the clock. 20:24. 8:24 pm and it's still bright day outside. She guessed that's how it is in Scandinavia in summer. Nobody minded though. This was an underground base and housed barely any windows. Nobody complained, though. After a cleanup this place would look very neat. Right now, it's a labyrinth of boxes stacked on each other. Downstairs, at least. Fluty had to admit, she missed the open sky. Haru did too. Bah, things had to be done and done urgently if they wanted to get rid of the invaders. City life was as usual, but much more restricted. Heartlessness, don't you think? Haru thought so, remembering he thug gang her and Yüce had stumbled upon as children. How could mice be so cruel to their fellow kind? Maybe Mother Nature made it this way.

Mitsuki set the cup back on the table. It was empty. Everything seemed to be peaceful and in order, which he liked. The girls in the couch were chatting away, and Lyra was busy coding a new protection system for the database if it was to be hacked. Then there was him, the huge bad luckster yet the leader of this group, dozing off into far away lands. What's gotten into him? Nah, it's not important, he thought.

In the afternoon, everybody was busy packing up and filling up the storages and whatnot. Everything from guns to cannons, grenades to bombs. Despite the Freedom Fighters being low on any resources classified as food, their arsenal was endless. Yet…there wasn’t use for it. What a waste! The main team, that being Siiri, Dakota, Raw, Ama, and Flutty were all put in one room. The more passive side, that being Lyra, Haru and Mitsuki (Mitsuki was obviously passive. He couldn’t even handle a gun.) were all put in a different room. To Siiri, this base was very nostalgic. She remembered how her father, Rune, used to tell her about his adventures. His colleague Thomas did too. But they’re all dead. There isn’t one of the Freedom Fighters who doesn’t have a depressing story. Sigh, life is cruel. Cruel indeed.

bit of a short chapter but this'll do. right? right???

::Chapter 10 "Blood and Ashes"

So here we are, command was left to the younglings. Mitsuki was perhaps the oldest along with Lyra, but it didn't help. High General left command. What are they going to do now? The moving was finished. Would they have any use of this artillery, when the enemy was barely but 7 mice? Those were their main target. The answer as usual was "wait and see". Tch, how annoying. That was everything Mitsuki thought of. Seriously though, what would become of them and this city if they failed? That's when it hit him. There was an old tunnel leading down here from an old observatory in the city's outskirts. Would they have to block that too? It's been abandoned for a while. Well, just closed actually. Yet still, they couldn't afford anybody finding out about it. Orders are to be carried out, right?

A military green helicopter landed on the spot marked with an H. Out stepped a redhead aviator with a masked mouse carrying a flamethrower and a mouse with jet black hair and an eyepatch of the same colour. Hermes was sober for once. The campsite looked, and was, abandoned. Did they perhaps manage to drive them away? Everything from the tiniest bullet to the biggest missile was gone.
"Hermes," pause. The wind bows. "Burn this place down."
Minutes later, everything was grey ash. Smoke still lingered in the air. No turning back anymore.
Now there was truly nothing left of the campsite. The helicopter lifted into the air and left, whipping up clouds of ash. Almost as if it was winter again.

Certainly, nothing was a pleasant experience anymore. 5 years of war, with futile results. What would become of them? Nobody knew. Is there any escape from this fate at all, if the future holds anything for them? Just when it seems like everything is dull and any hope is slipping away, Lyra let out a victory shout.
"I did it!" Everybody's ears perked up and a small round of applause was let out.
Everyone's cheering was abruptly ended by Mitsuki snapping the ballpoint pen in his hand, the red ink spilling over his glove and the table like blood.
"Enough," he said. "We're heading out, all of us. 4-1, 1-0, 6-3, A-4, 1-1, get out there and show those invaders what we've got!" Siiri, Flutty, Raw, Ama and Dakota shot up from their places and sprinted to their rooms to gather their weapons and other supplies. Siiri's voice had a sting of hate and excitement in it as she recited: "Falcon 4-1, Ladybug 1-0, Helix 6-3, Scarecrow A-4, Demon 1-1, heading out!"
Well out on the surface, stinking of sewer water, the female mice split up. Siiri, Flutty and Dakota, and Raw went with Ama. They'd cover more ground like this (obviously). All the mice were cautious, invaders could be around every corner.

As soon as Zenzi and her group woke up from the grenade shock, injured, the first thing everyone heard was the German aviator cursing.
"SCHEISSE!!" Ignoring the huge wound on her side, Zenzi angrily stomped her foot on the ground like a child. Sighing, she sat down and fell backwards into a pool of blood. Kaine got up, the front of him completely red and grinned. Axel shook his head slightly and put is paw on his hat, to make sure it was still there. He broke his nose and as soon as he noticed, Axel put a paw over it. Slowly, they gathered themselves up and limped back to camp. Axel was incredibly bothered by the blood trails they left. What is the Freedom Fighters were scouting around here? They'd be easy prey. Axel wasn't even sure anyone of them could hold a gun, not in their current state. Thoughts swirled around in his head, like blood into the sewers, washed away by rain water. The sky was cloudy. The rain began pouring down. 'Does the weather read my mind or something...?' Axel faintly thought to himself, but was thankful. No more blood trails and possible Freedom Fighters encounters.

Blood is thicker than water.
Ashes are as light as a feather.
Nobody makes it out alive without being on top of the food chain. Everybody, Freedom Fighters, Invaders, they all knew this. And they could tell, this war wasn't about to get pretty.

i finally got around finishing this. i also lost all of my other ND stuff. fuck.

::Chapter 11 "Demons"

"Destroy the cit--" Static.
"Or else you will die!!" Call end.

Morticia. The absolute last person Calix wanted to talk to. The absolute last person he'd like to meet, especially in these dire times. And she was coming to their base to inspect. Calix knew he couldn't lock himself up, and he wouldn't. Morticia was from the higher forces of their tribe, thriving in the city of Nordholm. Boy, how much Calix hated her. But that's a different story.
Knock knock. Cooper stood up, his shoes clanking against the cement as he walked towards the door. Unlocking it's multiple locks, the door swung up. Cooper's feathers on his hat twitched from the wind gust, and there she was. Morticia. Ebony hair down to her waist, blood-red bow stuck to it. Orange, brown and black fur accompanied by emerald eyes. Stepping over the porch, Cooper closed the door after her.
"Welcome." He got no response, and she continued on right up to Zenzi. Calix sat in the corner of the room with Shadow, beads of sweat forming on his forehead with his mask shielding it. Shadow eyed Morticia, noting she possessed a far more evil and intimidating aura than any of them. Knowing she is of a higher position, he had to lay down the attitude.
"Aviator," Morticia said with a sense of spite in her voice. Both pairs of green eyes met, Zenzi narrowing hers. "What's the cause of this disorder!?" The aviator couldn't care less about Morticia being from a higher position.
"Vhat's the cause?" Zenzi closed her fan, and slammed it against the desk. "Disobedience!! The opposition!! I'd razher kill zhem zhan having zhem alive!" Zenzi didn't care about shouting. The mouse who's hair was ebony stepped back a bit.
Calix couldn't believe this. This was the last thing he wanted Zenzi to do. Shout at Morticia is a big mistake. Her shouting at you, fine with her. Vice verse? Goodness no!!
"Well then..." Morticia made a little pause. "We've decided it's up to you if you want them alive or dead. The city has to be reduced to ashes!!!" With those words, she stormed off, pushed the door open and slammed it closed. Calix shot up from his place.
"Critter, this is absolute madness!! You..." his voice trailed off. "Nevermind." Calix sat back down and propped up his head with his hand. 'Gosh, what's going to become of this...' he thought.

Siiri almost got a heart attack when an iron door opened right around the corner and a black-haired mouse stepped out of it, seemingly dissapointed. She gave Dakota and Flutty the sign to back away and pulled down her microphone.
"Raw, Ama," she whispered, her blue eyes not letting the mouse that stepped out of the building from sight. "God damnded get over here! We might've found an another one of the invader's bases!" Giving them the coordinates and their location, Siiri signaled for Flutty to pull out her bow. It was a silent weapon, which was good. The pink haired mouse girl's eyes impaled the black haired one with her sight as she got the arrows ready.
Raw and Ama snuck around the corner and Raw tapped Siiri's shoulder. Flinching, the white mouse glared at Raw and told them to step back.
"4-1 reporting," Siiri grinned. "Enemy spotted, enemy base found."
"Engage." The bow's string twitched.
Flutty's arrow, adorned with white and blue feathers set off through the air. Swish! Morticia turned around, getting hit in the shoulder. All mice shot up from the crouching positions, some, including Ama, dashed around the corner and the heavy infantry girl kicked in the door. Dakota shot an another round into Morticia's elbow, which made for a gruesome splash of blood and a devilish cry. The higher ranks invader was too astounded to draw her gun, so she ran. Ran, away from this place.
As the five Freedom Fighters entered the building they cried out;
"In freedom's name, paint it red!!!"

Dakota threw an another one of her infamous explosives, a smoke bomb. Shots fired. Screams, smoke and coughing filled the air along with the smell of blood and gunpowder. Ama mercilessly planted hundreds of shots into the invader soldiers with her mini-gun. Dakota's duel guns were violently fired at everything and everybody around her, resulting in a frenzy of twisting and turning. Siiri left her sniper rifles at the base, and instead brought along a good ol' AK-47. Flutty and Ama stayed behind, finishing off anyone who wasn't killed by the intense gunfire. Soon, the room was painted red with blood, and even guts.

Axel's ears twitched at the sound of gun shots. Zenzi had already noticed this and came storming out of the control room with Calix and Shadow, all holding guns and rifles. Axel and Cooper silently readied their unholy spells, Kaine pulled out his syringes (which would probably drive everybody nuts). Hermes kept himself to a shotgun to not burn down the whole place.
The door was once again kicked in by the heavy infantrier. The invaders' eyes widened at the sight of smoke and blood behind their opponents.
"My my, has someone come unglued?" Kaine jested and giggled at his own comment. Siiri wiped the blood splat off of her cheek with the back of her glove, her white shirt with rolled up sleeves was stained down with blood. Well, everybody has bloodstains on them. Calix shivered at the thought of blood and the memories he had.
"To the death," Siiri said, pointing her AK-47 at Zenzi.
"To zhe death."

In times like these, you have to listen to your inner demons.
In times like these, you can incorporate your hatred and spite into bullets.

Actions speak louder than words.

GUN SHOTS.
SMOKE.
BLOOD.
SCREAMS.
GUTS.

LET'S DO THIS.

::Chapter 12 “Icy silencers and crossbows”

Holes in walls, roof. Cracked glass. Smoke and blood. The gunfight was over. Zenzi and her team were left alone in the base, injured. The Freedom Fighters ran from the base, also wounded. Down the sewers, careful to cover up the blood trails. Luckily Raw and Flutty were there to patch them up, more or less. Someone almost got shot in the head, it could’ve been a death. Mitsuki was furious when he got wind of that, though, Lyra was softer on the girls. Lucky for them.

It has been quite windy and cold lately, the weather signaling September. The rain would wash the streets, at least. The birches and maples were slowly taking back the chlorophyll in their leaves, painting themselves shades of fire. Some mornings were so cold, you could see your breath coming out of your mouth and nose. Everybody’s question was, what are we to do? The tapping of a keyboard and the rustle of a pen were heard. Lyra was coding something, again. And Mitsuki was writing, or rather, drawing. On the city map. Marking possible locations of the Invader’s bases, with their crest. They’d need an investigation patrol, he thought, mentally puzzling the girls together. In the end, his results were Siiri, Flutty, and Dakota. Flutty would need to be equipped with a crossbow, Siiri and Dakota needed stronger silencers. Mitsuki wasn’t sure about silencers, but he knew they had crossbows, survival bows, arrows, you name it. Well, if the two sharpshooting mice needed stronger silencers they’d have to deal with different firearms. Ack, being a leader wasn’t easy, oh lord no.

Meanwhile, Siiri and Dakota at the shooting range.
“Siiri, take a look at this rifle! We found it further in the old storages and it won’t shoot, though it’s loaded.” Dakota called over to the white mouse. Siiri walked up to her, shifting the little straw in her mouth. Taking the rifle from her colleague, she shook it and smacked it against a box. Plucking away a few parts, she shook and hit it against the stone wall.
“Shit damn, it was full of ice!” Siiri exclaimed, staring in awe at the frozen water by her feet, that fell out from the rifle. “Let’s shoot a round or two and see if it’s alright.” The mouse with the cat hat but back the plucked away parts, and went to a target at the range. Putting on the headphones that would silence the sound, Siiri aimed and shot a so-called ratata-serie. The bullets rapidly cut through the air, hitting the target.
“I never thought a rifle could be full of ice,” Dakota picked up a piece of the frozen water. Crush. It made the sound of glass. Both sharpshooters spent some more time at the range, for no particular reason, really. The sniper was still chewing on her straw, and the blindfolded mouse girl messing with guns.
“I wish there were silencers for miniguns,” Dakota said as she looked at ammunition for Ama’s firearms, grinning. Both girls laughed.

Flutty went through her new equipment. A 2013 PSE TAC Elite Crossbow, arrows, and a selection of broadheads. The broadhead named Toxic caught her eye particularly, even if it was made for hunting deer. She had tested it before, and knew, it’d do good cutting. A clean shot, perhaps? Who knows. She obviously needed living targets to find out it’s true effect, but decided to carry a number of each broadheads she had gotten to see which one fit her best. Same with the crossbows. Flutty also housed a number of bows. Well, not like they were her absolute favourite. Though, in her opinion, the survival bow was the most practical. You could pick it apart and put it back together, no problem. That’s what the hid under her jacket, even if it took a moment to set up. Flutty couldn’t wait to try out these new things on living, breathing, sentient targets. Targets in form of their enemy.

The three mice had been informed about the scouting mission, about how dangerous it could be, etcetera. Nobody really liked Mitsuki’s lections. Half of the marked locations seemed to have sewer locks not especially far away, so they might aswell navigate the sewers. Sometimes you could see blood dripping down into the polluted water, the Invaders had gotten more and more aggressive. Exiting to one of the channels, Siiri, Dakota and Ama set off, their slim silhouettes moving swiftly in the dim light. Everything was a sickening green, with a stench to complete. Siiri didn’t know what was worse, sewers drenched in blood or a cemetery with dug up graves. The sniper wasn’t sure why she compared to sewers to a cemetery. Perhaps, because bodies were getting dumped in here? It disgusted not only her, but everybody else. The world had never been a pleasant place, and it wasn’t going to become one anytime soon.

The sewers were almost too cold to be shivering, or so the girls thought. It started raining when they came out of the first vent. The place marked on the map wasn’t far away, and they decided to traverse the shadows. Everything was so grey, and the only thing that shone through now would be blood.

crossbow
toxic broadhead
survival bow

also a ratata-serie is a series of rapidly-shooting bullets
