So basically, let me explain this with a simpler to digest analogy

So let's say, when you're born, you're given a flower. Probably a rose.

So, throughout your life, you have roses with you. (To see what's your FLOWER/CHEESE, use the sun consumable)

And for other people, they'll also have other types of flowers for each person too! Like tulips, lilies...

If you hi-5 a person with tulips, they get a rose, while you get a tulip.

So basically, you give others your allocated flower, while others give their allocated flower to the person they hi-5.

I hope this sounds simple enough to understand!

AGAIN, IT'S ALL SPECTULATIONS SO IT MIGHT BE WRONG

It's actually how the event works, excepting the "giving" part. Your cheese/sign won't change no matter what.
