The Epiphany takes place on January the 6th and celebrates the date of the visit of the Magi to the infant Jesus. On this day the three Wise Men arrived from the East, guided by the Star of Bethlehem, bearing gifts for the divine infant. In France, it is on 6 January that the Wise Men figurines in the nativity scene are placed around baby Jesus; in the lead up to this date, they were either hidden or being gradually moved closer and closer to the stable. French people also celebrate the Epiphany by eating the “galette des rois” (Kings’ cake) ceremoniously!

There's a comemoration in France, that, in the first sunday after New Year, that people buy creamy almond pie, and receive two paper crown (All that from a bakery shop). This is all for Fête des Rois (King's day, or King's party, I dunno).

this is most likely right considering the main thing of that holiday is the King's Cake and would explain the portrait and the castle.

there's actually a little trinket hidden in the cake, so whoever finds it in the cake is crowned king for the day!
so the event may be luck based and like presents? that's at least my guess if they go by the cake tradtion.
