NOTE: If you have nothing good to say, please don't say anything.

Dota stands for Defence of the Ancients

What is this?:
Dota 2 is an MOBA (meaning multiplayer online battle arena) in which you are either on Radiant or Dire side, which consists of 5 heroes each defending the ancient, once either ancient is destroyed, the game is finished and is decided of which side destroyed the ancient. There are 104 heroes to pick from, and more are still being added. Each hero have from 4 to 7 skills, you can earn money by the second, but you can make this quicker by last hitting creeps (meaning you kill the creep). There are items that can make your hero stronger, or even your team-mates. There is a courier mechanic which can deliver your items from the base to you. There are 3 main atributes, which are Strength, Agility and Intelligence.

Who made this?
Valve made this game, which is most known for making Portal , Team Fortress, Left 4 Dead and The Half life series. They make fun games :3

Tips: If you are new to this game, I would suggest tutorial, even if it takes FOREVER... and if you are ready for online play, you should pick limited heroes as the game mode. (It's basically the easiest heroes you can play as)

The game is WAY too hard to explain, so I will make edits later. We are just discussing about the game, so please read the note at the top.

For starters, it's a MOBA (and the very first, as well)

It started as a Warcraft 3 mod and quickly became popular. I think the main brain behind all this is Icefrog. Then Valve got their hands on it and bam, we now have a standalone game. It just recently finished with the open beta phase.

It's a fun game, I love it, but it has a really massive learning curve :s
So getting used to everything, learning heroes' skills and other fancy stuff takes a lot of time and some people might get discouraged easily from playing.

*It's Radiant not Radient.

Learning curve? More like a learning mountain.

I used to play WC3 dota years ago, started with dota 2 during the beta, but haven't played too much. It takes a certain mindset to handle all the trolling in pubs.

Valve did a great job with the port from WC3 though, the game feels and plays almost exactly the same as the original. Moreover, if you know the game, watching competitive is fairly entertaining on the bored-out-of-your-skull nights.

I play both LoL and Dota (lol considerably more) and IMO LoL is piss easy compared to Dota.
League has less micro-management, skills are very simple, the jungle is signifcantly simpler, and it has easier mechanics.
Easy champions in League are a lot easier than easy champions on Dota too (except crystal maiden and bane I guess), making it more welcoming to beginners.

A little background story never hurts. Especially since this is basically a port and not an entirely new game that has nothing to do with the previous installment.

Anyway, I should play more, but I suck at this game so bad
What heroes to try or are fun to play

What are you on about? :P Started wc3 back in 2004~ and Dota 2 doesn't feel the same at all. Dark as sh*t map, most heroes look different due to copyright stuff.... mainly why I still play wc3 DotA.

Actually I think Eul started it.. but when I started it, it was version 5.84 which made by Guinsoo who's behind the developping of LoL. But IceFrog kinda made what dota is with the 50+ versions he made.. Added too many heroes+items, fixed too many bugs, changed some designs and so on.

I started Dota 2 first, then tried LoL because some friends play that too. LoL feels a lot easier, but I prefer things like the courier system on Dota 2. I love the humor to it, the heroes lines, the way some of them refer to each other. I LOVE IT AND I'M SO BAD AT IT BUT I HAVE FUN ANYWAY.

Of course there are graphical differences, but those aside the mechanics are still exactly the same barring a few minor tweaks/fixes from the warcraft 3 engine. You don't play dota for looks anyway, it's the gameplay that matters.

Yes of course but you said "feel" cause I felt really different about it when I first played a few games.. Didn't wanna get used to because I can still actively play wc3 one. I'm not saying Dota2 is bad anyways :P

E: just wc3 dota is better in my opinion.
