It is indeed derogatory but I find it as derogatory as "nerdy" or "geeky" is.
Many people (at least in the west) embrace the word so it's nothing to really fuss over.
"Weeaboo" is a better insult.

Even if that's how you find it, in Japan it's a severe insult.
