A man driving down the road all by himself. He sees a woman standing on the side of the road with her thumb up, meaning she needs a ride.
The man picks her up and brings her to her home. When she goes, the man realises the woman left something in the back seat! When the man goes to her house, the parents tell him she's been dead a long time ago...

My favourite one I ALWAYS believed as a kid, crossing to the Karoo was hella scary at night b/c of this

Can't find the story, but there's a young Boer man who walks the Transvaal at night eating stray bok. The bones are picked clean and even though people think it's jackals that got the best of the bok, "studies" show that the meal couldn't have been bleached (b/c the bones are so fresh). There are human nail marks on most bok bones found on that hill.
The man was killed in a fire that swept the veld in the 1800s. He tells travelers about the burning apparently inside dreams, but not of which he died from, but the Scortched Earth that happened in the second boer war.
