I thought that hey, who knows, maybe there are more 'kin in this community, so that we could chatter around here, or at the very least, I could answer questions about my life as otherkin!

~Otherkin For Dummies~
Otherkin are, simply put, individuals who identify as non-human in some sort of way. Furthermore, therian is a subcommunity within the 'kin community, and one can be both otherkin and therian. A therian identifies as an animal which does or has evidently existed on earth, while otherkin in general could identify from mice to robots to plants, anything under and over the sun, really. There's also fictionkin, individuals who identify as fictional characters, even human ones. For some, it's a spiritual thing, for others, it might just be an identity expression or a coping mechanism.
Otherkin are not oppressed, at worst, we face some social stigma, and heck, virgins face social stigma too.

That's all I have for that right now, I guess. But I will share what on earth I identify as - a troll from scandinavian folklore. :3c

Trying to explain the idea of being an otherkin to your parents is harder then asking your best friend to stop sitting on your invisible tail. At least my therapist understands. She let's me run around with my tail on in public, understands when I have to cover my ears when people whistle, and my face pressing up against the glass when I'm watching the foxes at the zoo. (and when I sit there for hours, crying when we leave)

This is a common misconception, don't worry!
While otherkin can be furries, the two aren't interchangable. Furry is an artistic preference for anthropromorphic animals, while otherkin is, as mentioned before, an identity. For example, most therians don't identify as much with antropromorphic versions of their kintype, or at least not as much as their feral equivalents. I don't like drawing paralells to trans terminology, but furry is to otherkin sort of what drag artists are to the trans community = entertainment vs identity, that is.

So, I've been avoiding this topic for a while because it's a bombshell in the making as you see above; but I feel like I need to disagree to that.

I know a lot of furries. They're great people. They're not just attracted to it artistically though, they fursuit and some feel that they are animals. So maybe not all of them are truly otherkin, but they show tendencies of it.
