Studio Ghibli Thread

What is 'Studio Ghibli'?

In a nutshell, It is a Japanese animation studio that has produced many feature length anime films and can be considered the 'Disney' of Japan. They are the company behind such films as Howl's Moving Castle, My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Ponyo, Grave of the Fireflies as well as many others. Most of these films have been among the highest grossing animated films in Japan. You're likely to have seen a character from at least one of these movies somewhere.

Ok, but why did you make this thread?

Well, recently Hayao Miyazaki (one of the founders of Studio Ghibli and main director of many of their films) retired which caused the company to take a break from usual business and reconsider their future. I heard about this from friends and various sites but had never watched any of their films, so I decided it was time to do so. After watching My Neighbour Totoro and Spirited Away, I could see what all the hype was about. They make some preeeetty good films and I'm a little hooked on them at the moment.

So what can I do now?

Sit back, grab an ice tea and share with us your experiences with any of their films. Which one's do you like, what's your favourite character, what do you think about them potentially closing?

What I like most of all is how traditionally beautiful these movies look. There's painstaking detail in the background that by itself is so pleasing, yet it serves no more purpose than being background. Despite Totoro being for a younger demographic than me, it still held more than enough vibrancy both visually and plot-wise for me to enjoy all the way through. Also Catbus. *-*

So yes, share your thoughts! I would love to hear them. =)

Castle in the Sky was my first one and probably one of their best along with Totoro, Porco Rosso, and Spirited Away(?). Although I love Ghibli, I was disappointing with Howl's Moving Castle, Ponyo, and Ni no Kuni.

I'm so sad that the studio shut down, so many of the movies they produced are great and will stick with me through life, the animations and storylines were all so amazing. :(

I came because I saw things about Studio Ghibli. Tonari no Totoro was the thing that amazed my classmates. We had a movies show off in 10th grade (?) and my homeroom teacher allowed me to bring stuff by Hayao Miyazaki. I'm glad it made them understand that Japanese animations aren't a joke. But wait, who wouldn't be amazed by a Studio Ghibli movie?

I also saw Spirited Away and Mononoke Hime. I felt a bit confused at the end of Mononoke Hime because I didn't understand what happened with boy's vision about his home. Didn't he start to miss the people here?

I was thinking to watch Castle in the Sky. Is it good? I saw a lot of people talking about it.

I started each paragraph with "I" o_o

Ah I remember years ago one of my teachers decided to show us Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind rather than teach us, I remember loving it and that's where my love for Ghibli started *-*

I've watched a lot! I was told not to watch Grave of The Fireflies, though! It's suppose to be sad, but I'm hoping to watch it with a friend with one of these days. Loved Princess Mononoke,Totoro, Spirited Away, The Cat Returns, Kiki, and Ponyo. Loved them all, but Ponyo I didn't really like.
