I've heard of it described as how you recharge yourself when you're feeling down.

Extroverts will reach out and meet new people, both talking about themselves and their aspirations as well as listening to others about their problems and discussing them.

Introverts will want to think through their own solutions to their problems, or shut them out by reading a book or going for a long walk, hearing about someone elses problems when an introvert needs to recharge would be the last thing they want.

As you correctly point out, some people fit into one or the other at different times, and introverted people can be fun at parties whilst an extrovert can enjoy spending time thinking.

I'm definitely an extrovert and don't particularly like thinking about myself. If I'm left alone thinking I usually create mathematics or coding problems for myself to solve, then proceed to work on them, and quickly end up back online attempting to discuss my problem with others.
