So two of my pet mice had babies, each a day after the other. One of the mothers was brown and the other black, and the dad of each was black, but from what I know about genetics, they carry several genes that would make for really pretty babies. Anyway, they clumped their litters together in the same nest so it's just this big pile of 12+ wriggly pink baby mice...

...And I've got a pic!

http://i.imgur.com/od1RU8e.png

The does (mommas) weren't feeling very photogenic and I didn't want to bother them anymore, so no pic of them. (although both of them are currently in the nest on top of the mass of babies) But more pics to come! Very excited to see them full grown - having reared litters before, I promise you they do get cuter, then super cute, then just plain cute again once they're full grown.

Oh, by the way, if in the above pic you see a mouse that looks like it has no eyes, it actually does but it doesn't show because there's no black pigment in the eye since they're albino. Those mice will grow up to be completely white with red eyes.

...But that's the best part!

Yep. Some animals are naturally born early in development before any pigment, fur, or independence is developed, whereas others go late. Mice, many birds like parrots, bunnies and so forth are among them. Marsupials are an extreme example - kangaroos are born the size of a jelly bean with only two legs and no eyeballs or anything at all. Other animals are born in much later development, like hares and some monkeys. Humans are a bit in the middle - some development like opened eyes, but still helpless.

These guys will look like tiny kittens in just a week and trust me - they are absolutely adorable. Unless something eats them first.

Aw they're so cute! If you keep them, you should show us what they look like in the future!

Ahh, that reminds me of 2nd grade. Both our mice had babiesss and they were so fluffy and cute! That's when we added a "Vet" job to our 'job list' (whoever was the 'vet' for that week would have to change their water and food)

This is actually the fruits of a personal genetics project I've been working on for a while now. Certainly I'll keep them and maybe their babies as well. This may very well be a progression thread! :D

ahh! I had mice babies too, once
they are so ugly in the begin, but watching them grow so pretty, is amazing!
Sadly i had a mouse that ran away, got knocked up by some wild mouse, and came back. So they were wild and just plain fur, and bit me. But hey

The parents have plain fur, (black and agouti) but if the genetics line up nice, I can have gingers and cows (black pieds) and shiny furred mice.

I have a strict, social darwinism policy with my mice - any that bite are snake food. I grew up keeping hamsters that were always aggressive and gave me a phobia of rodents for a while, and I don't want to return to that. My mice are pretty good for the most part though.

i have a feeling your mice are gonna be beautiful
and i completely get the policy, a mouse that bites is just a waste of space
