I feel like you should be able to delete your posts.
It just feels so restrictive and limited.

Maybe you shouldn't be able to delete your post forever.
Some websites allow you to delete your posts for a limited amount of time and then it's permanent after that period of time.
Maybe if you regret posting a post, or accidentally double post or post something in the wrong place, you can delete the post within an hour of it being up, or 30 minutes, or 10 minutes, or something like that.
After that period of time, you may never delete it again.

This could lead to abuse, though. Somebody could post something rude or hurtful, and then delete it before it gets deleted.
And what would happen to the messages quoting that post? What about the number of posts on the thread? Would that change? What if somebody started a topic, and then deleted it?
If you want to remove your post, just edit it out.

This could lead to abuse, though. Somebody could post something rude or hurtful, and then delete it before it gets deleted.

This could be solved by making it so that moderators/administrators/sentinels/mod-sentinels (okay, let's just say staff members) can see deleted posts, but regular users cannot.

nibblerrat a dit :
And what would happen to the messages quoting that post?

The other posts quoting the deleted posts would stay.

nibblerrat a dit :
What about the number of posts on the thread? Would that change?

Deleted posts make the number of posts go down.
If a thread has 10 posts and someone deletes their post, it changes to 9.
Isn't that the logical thing?

nibblerrat a dit :
What if somebody started a topic, and then deleted it?

The thread along with all of its posts would be deleted.
By deleted, I don't necessarily mean removed from the site.
It could just be hidden from regular users, but not from staff members, kind of like Reddit's remove function.¨
Reddit has a delete and remove function.
The delete function deletes your post forever and is not visible to anyone, unless you still have the link to that post.
It is not visible on the creator's profile, in the subreddit it was posted to, or when searching for Reddit posts, but if you have the link, you can still view it.
You can only view the comments that haven't been deleted, though, because deleted posts automatically change the post's text to "[deleted]."
The remove feature is only available for subreddit moderators, and it doesn't delete posts, but it removes posts from the subreddit so that it is not visible anywhere in the subreddit, not even when searching for the specific post, but it is still viewable on the creator's profile.
The text automatically changes to "[removed]," though.
The delete function in this forum could be similar.
Deleting your post could make it invisible for all normal users except for yourself, the poster, and staff members.

If you want to remove your post, just edit it out.

That's the problem.
If you double post, editing the post won't solve anything. There are still two posts in a row.
If a post is locked, you also can't edit it. I'm not necessarily saying that deleting locked posts should be possible, though.
If you post in the wrong place, just editing it doesn't solve it. It's still a post in the wrong place, therefore it is spam.
If you delete it, nobody will be bothered by it and you can go ahead and post it in the correct place.

Big block of text

Another thing, what if somebody gains access to another person's account? (Please don't say that it was the person's fault for this, because it theoretically isn't) That "hacker" could go around, deleting all of the original person's threads with ease. That's all of the original person's hard work creating threads, gone. Maybe that person had a fanart thread. Not anymore.
If you want a post removed, like I said, edit it. Nobody's going to cry if you say "Accidental double post/Wrong topic/Removed/etc.". If you really want it removed, ask a sentinel. Being able to remove or delete posts will just cause a LOT of confusion.

They could just use the edit button to take out what they said then type "Edit: Removed" instead.

As I said, once you delete a post, it doesn't necessarily have to be deleted.
It can still be visible for staff members, which means that it's not actually deleted, which also means that it can be recovered.
If someone gains access to someone else's account and deletes their posts, once the original owner has regained access to the account, they can ask a staff member to recover the deleted posts.

This pretty much solves this thread's suggestion.
