But you're just typing a long message so it seems like you're afk.

(You could also just copy what you're typing, And then tell them you're there)

I don't think "I'm afraid of change" is a good reason to reject this suggestion :P This would be neat, imo. Even just a little symbol next to the name would be enough.

This isn't necessarily "I'm afraid of change", but rather I liked the chat before this recent update and can see how much better it was than the newer version and this suggestion.

The usefulness of this is.........(I'm not creative enough, nevermind)

But that update didn't really have anything to do with this suggestion besides being related to chatting.

I must not be making myself as clear as I would like, but this wouldn't be as big as a problem with me now considering they removed the name thing already. It would take up a lot of space to have your name, a chat bubble, and you actual chat all in one space. I still don't really like this idea though, I just feel like it's not one of my favorites.
