Make sure your friends have "Display messages of players from other communties" on in the settings menu.
As well as that, if you try speaking in EN2 but your computer is in another language other than English, you won't be able to speak.
Have you also considered the notion of them accidently having you on their ignore list? They can simply check my going to the "Ignored" section of the friendlist.
