There's been a big wave of new accounts spamming the site of a transformice clone recently (if you stand in a default room for a while you'll get these messages too, so I won't put any reference to it). I'd say it's time to implement some kind of message filtering. While a keyword-based spam filter would be quite easy to bypass, it would at least make it harder to flood the chat.

I'd also suggest considering the possibility of silencing newbies until they reach a certain number of cheese/rounds, or restricting their message rate so that legitimate newcomers can still chat normally. Even a combination of these could be considered (e.g. filtering messages that contain something that looks like a URL).

I was going to suggest something similar to this. Hell, even one of the pirated servers I checked out has a feature where you need at least 5 cheese to talk.
