In old school mode no skill items or skills can be used by shamans. You can enable or disable it in the feather button where hardmode and divine mode are located. The player cannot change the shaman colors in this mode. The player can unlock the mode with 700 normal mode saves.

Not really. It is more like you still add skill points, but the game doesn't allow you to use them unless you change the mode.

or you could always just redistribute and lose your skills and use the default colour '-'

Yeah, but this mode won't cost cheese like redistributing and you won't need to worry about changing the shaman colors.
