Hi. I've been wanting to write this for a long time. This is a closed fanfiction meaning you cannot add characters, however I will allow occasional pop-ins. This story takes place in Japan, and is about a tribe, the Rebellion, who have been taking part in underground activity for 30 years after being banished by the mice of the land. But now, they're back. I reccomend you read the prologue though it's way more direct. Note that if you make a character, they must have at least one red item on them to signify their membership in the Rebellion.

Also do not worry I will continue writing on New Divide while I'm at this. I suppose you guys still want to read besides writing is fun.

We were chased away with fire and steel. We have been gone for thirty years. But now we are back. Back to bring terror, demolition, pain and fear upon this land. For this is our revenge. We will rise again and again. Anybody standing in our way shall be cut down. For this is the oath I swore, and I will fulfill it until my day comes.

Chapter One

The white-haired mouse sat behind her desk. It was littered with parchments and scrolls, which calligraphy was inscribed upon. Two particular parchments, however, with the symbols 火, “hi”, fire, and 鋼,“hagane”, steel, hung on the wall along with a third scroll reading 反乱, “hanran”. The tribe had been banished with fire and steel, now she was going to use it against their enemies. Even though Natsume was young, everybody thought she pulled off leading the Rebellion quite well. Maybe she was occasionally cheeky, but her subordinates thought it was cute. She was thankful for Tadayuki, the mouse who had served her father so well. A male mouse with black hair and a hat in a similar color covering his head knocked on the heavy wooden doors to taichou Kusunoki’s office.

“Come in, “she groaned to the mouse, and to him it sounded almost as if his commander was tired. The mouse that had come by had white and brown speckled fur, bringing his eyes to the calligraphy parchments on the wall as he shuffled in behind the doors.

“Commander, daily report,”

“Oh, Kameyama…go on,” Natsume was dizzy, and she didn’t know why. The mouse named Kameyama in last name gave her a concerned gaze, but continued.

“Borders are silent. We hear nothing worrying of Python. The land seems to be unknowing about our return.”

“That’s good. Anything else?” the male mouse shook his head, “Dismissed. You may go,” and with that, he left. This mouse’s name was Oki, and he was a loyal follower to the Rebellion. Kameyama was always able to hold good contact with the allies, even the taichou. This was a big help for the young newcomer, Suzumura Hira. She was very timid at first, but Oki was daring enough to talk to the ebony-haired mouse. ‘This day is peaceful’, were Oki’s thoughts. ‘I hope it’ll stay like this for some more.’

Tadayuki sat in his room, a pencil dipped in ink in his hand. Calligraphy has always been calming to the samurai, but the death of Kusunoki Masaki-sama, Natsume’s father, still was quite traumatizing to him. He had sworn to protect his daughter, for that was his duty. Tadayuki knew Natsume was a very cunning mouse, but he was still worried. However, with the arrival of the newest member, Python, he had remarked that the taichou felt safer. ‘After all, we’re there to protect you.’

“Hira-chan, would you like some tea?!” the ebony-haired mouse, with a red flower kanzashi attached to her hair, perked up her ears at Oki’s voice.

“Hmm, oh, yes please!” Hira, who was assigned as the medic’s apprentice was quite happy to have tea with Oki. They had developed quite the friendship over the past months, and everybody was delighted to see that the former miko felt welcome. Even if the Rebellion’s current goal was revenge, it was bound to settle down. At first everybody insisted on calling Hira “shrine girl”, but Oki and Tadayuki convinced the rest of the members to call her by name. The young mouse girl’s thoughts were interrupted by the door sliding aside, and the sight of Oki with a small tray that was topped with Chinese porcelain and dango on a plate. These ruins of a mansion weren’t the best, but every member and follower did everything in their power to make this place better. A good job was done, even in Natsume’s opinion. Oki took off his hat and sat down by the low table, across from Hira.

Steam from the teapot had ceased, and the small wooden sticks were everything that was left on the plate.
“Say, Hira-chan, why’d you join?” Oki’s dark brown, almost black orbs shifted to the hairpin in Hira’s hair, then her face.
“I don’t know…Something had led me here. I mean, even if I’m a former shrine maiden I’ve always felt some kind of divine intervention around me. I do feel like this is the right place for me to be at, though…” the apprentice eyed the room, the slightly battered lanterns on the floor, the banners with Rebellion’s black insignia against a color so red it could be compared to the sunset, or blood. After all, this tribe has had it’s share of dark history and past. Their ways were violent, though once you have joined Natsume’s followers you have thrown away everything, and you cannot return. Kusunoki-san’s daughter gave everyone the much-needed encouragement after many losses and battles, that kept everybody’s spirit strong and heads high. Oki smiled.

“I think so, too. Maybe this is the place you belong in.”

Chapter Two

The Rebellion consisted of mostly mice of Asian ethnicity, specifically Japanese. However, a number of members were anything but from Asia. Two of those were Python and Valencia. Most of Python’s origins and story were unknown to everybody but the taichou, but Valencia was openly known to be from Europe. Both were sitting on the veranda of the Japanese-style mansion, watching the soft snow fall and coat the landscape in a shimmering blanket of white. The blonde mouse girl had a scarlet cape draped around her shoulders, and a rose of a similar color stuck to her hair. The male with patterned fur and a piece of blue cloth over his eyes wore a red ring. Weapons were lying beside them, expertly-crafted. The warrior and the scout’s thoughts drifted in the wintery landscape. The tranquility was interrupted by the veranda door being slid away by the samurai, Tadayuki. He didn’t enter, but motioned for Python to come through. Valencia didn’t twitch a muscle. Floorboards creaked under the male mouse’s boots and daggers were sheathed.

“Kusonoki-sama’s office,” said a muffled voice behind the dragon mask. Python nodded and grinned. He liked the commander, a lot. The door was about to be closed when Valencia flew to her feet and stopped it with her naginata, then walked through and closed it. A lingering feeling of frost was still biting on both mice that had sat outside. In the hallway, their ways separated. The European mouse went left, while the slightly mysterious Python took the opposite direction. Why’d Natsume want him in right now, anyway? That question was asked frequently by internal voices in the members’ minds, but the taichou was unpredictable and odd with her demands. It almost felt as if the two foreign mice’s every movement was synchronized and planned. The door to Valencia’s door slid open at the same moment as Python pushed and slunk through the heavy mahogany doors to Natsume’s study. The smell of green tea smacked against Python’s nose, and he couldn’t help the little smile curling up on his lips.

“Hey,”

“Good day, commander~”

“Don’t call me that,” that familiar conversation started chimed throughout the room. The albino taichou had gone on for 3 years telling Python to call her by name, however she knew perfectly he was teasing her. Yet it almost became a habit.

“So, why’d you call?” Python had leaned against the wooden table after brushing some parchments away.

“I’m bored. Keep me company,” Natsume was obviously tired, and looked as if she might fall asleep at any moment. Her slender hand coated in a black leather glove reached for an exquisite porcelain teapot painted with flowers in Japanese watercolor style. Water with a leaf green shade poured out of the teapot’s nose into a matching cup, perfectly warm. A bigger smile curled up on Python’s lips, it was just adorable how Natsume got lonely like this sometimes. A small plate with dango was shot towards the male mouse on the big table. He hadn’t noticed the plate earlier. Python and the taichou could spend hours sitting like this, conversing about nothing. It was one of those moments, and the scout was about to crack one of his jokes.

“Hey, taichou. A mouse is running on a black road but it’s getting nowhere. Why?”

“Because it’s running on a treadmill,” Natsume grinned while the words flowed out of her mouth like tea out of the teapot. Each time the albino mouse answered this Python just couldn’t stop laughing. It was great, these moments were truly memorable.

Silence. Darkness. The swish of a blade was heard, and a straw dummy was sliced in two by the blade of Valencia’s naginata lance. Another swish with the blade of a katana and two straw mice were decapitated by the edge of Hina’s katana. A soft applause came from a male mouse, sitting on the ground. Tadayuki lifted the edge of his dragon mask.

“Your skill has greatly improved, Hira-chan,” he said, walking over to the ruined figures. “Yet you can do better,” was the continuation of his sentence. Not even Oki, who’s eyes were as sharp as an eagle’s had caught the movement of the veteran samurai’s sword. He was the master of iaijutsu, the art of drawing one’s sword, cutting down one’s opponent and sheathing the sword all in one motion. Many wanted to learn iaijutsu with Tadayuki’s help, but few got the chance. Today it was Hira’s turn to train. Valencia was here just because her timing was impeccable and the European female mouse arrived in synchronization with the former miko. She slid open the door and exited the training grounds. Oki had waited for Hira to sheathe and bind her katana, then left with his best friend.

Chapter Three

A peaceful feeling hovered over the mansion. It was soon to be broken, though. By the time everyone was done at the training grounds everything was covered in straw and Tadayuki had called in a subordinate to clean up. The sun was setting as Natsume and Python's conversation turned into something more serious rather than just jokes. They talked about the future. What would happen in the future? The teapot was now empty and so was the dango plate. A piece of paper was on Natsume's desk, with notes scribbled in her neat and pretty cute handwriting. Python had left with light steps, as if he was a shadow. Hira sat in the mansion's perhaps not so extensive library, flipping through medicinal notes and books of former healers and doctors. Oki sat in an outpost tower, watching the horizon. A black line materialised seemingly far away, and Oki had noticed. he saw banners, spears and swords dyed blue. In a hurry he stumbled down the wooden tower stairs and raced into the mansion telling every mouse in his way what he saw. 'I have to report to taichou,' his thoughts were. 'The Oshitsu no Teiko had found us.'

"Oshitsu no Teiko!?" was Natsume's exclamation. "Since when?!" Racing out of her study, Natsume's blood boiled with anger. Oshitsu no Teiko, or the Royal Resistance was a governmental force formed by the king and his peers. They had banished the Rebellion thirty years ago. To Natsume, their acts were unforgivable. To Shirai Toshizo, particularly Natsume's father's actions were unforgivable. Even if he was dead now Toshizo didn't doubt that the daughter of the Kusonoki family would follow the same steps. That's why she had to be killed. Their advance was firm and soon the Royal Resistance stood at the gates of a semi-crumbling mansion. The heavy doors opened with a creaking noise, revealing Natsume and upon hundreds of warriors. Among them were Hira at the back, Oki in the middle and Tadayuki at the frontline. Natsume's red eyes flicked to the Royal Resistance's commander.
"Why, long time no see, Kusonoki-san," he uttered while a small smirk painted itself on his face. Raven black hair obscured Toshizo's eyepatch on the left eye. His long, indigo coloured coat swayed gently in the winter breeze. "How have you been doing?"
"Very well," Natsume genuinely spat out those words, also with a tiny grin. Tadayuki had told her many times that her hatred shouldn't cloud her judgement. Now was a good time to remember those words.

As black clouds were swept away, the crescent moon bared itself. It's serene but cold light illuminated the snowy coat on everybody's surroundings. Toshizo and Natsume had drawn their swords. This was the calm before a storm.
"Round the enemy," was Natsume's command. A fierce battle sparked in the mansion courtyard. Swords clashed, pained screams were released and blood spilled into the snow. Hira took on the weaker unit with mainly exorcism slips, which proved to be surprisingly effective. When she ran out of them the former miko resorted to her sword. Oki and Tadayuki's movements were smooth and quick, disposing of dozens of soldiers. However, even the Royal Resistance slaughtered mercilessly. Their blue coats dyed with blood shone with an ominous purple in the moonlight. Valencia and Python served as back-up, while both leaders were engaged in a heated battle themselves. An almost illegible conversation was between the two, mainly consisting of shouts and insults in mocking tones. Hundreds have already been slain or suffered deep injury, but neither side feigned retreat. The night was long and victory would be fleeting. Hira had taken to patching up the wounded with Valencia defending her fellow tribe mate. Python dealed damage from behind because of his impeccable stealth skills.

After the sun's first red rays had leaked onto the snow, the mansion courtyard was dyed red and sprinkled with corpses in red and blue. The Royal Resistance had turned around with a severe look of disappointment on their faces. Toshizo on the other side had, humbly said, enjoyed it. With his current condition most mice would've mistaken him for an onryo or yurei because of his perfectly white fur and raven hair briefly dyed in blood. The Oshitsu no Teiko had marched away into the sunrise, despite most mice saying,
"Night is their time."

shorter chapter but yeah

onryo - malicious spirit
yurei - ghost

Chapter Four

Cherry blossoms. The ground was littered with them. A lone figure, sitting on a bench clenched his hand into a fist with a grin as one fell into his hand.
“I’ll kill you, surely.”

The commander of Oshitsu no Teiko, Shirai Toshizo turned around and the sound of steps.
“Oh, Hayashi. Troubled?” He grinned again.
“No sir. Just… Daichi slacking off again.”
“Oi, let him be. Mission is over.”
“Yes sir.”
The slightly blue-furred mouse, Hayashi Aya, moved carefully toward her commander. Plopping down on the wooden bench beside him, she watched a scenery dyed in pink.
“Were you disappointed after we retreated?” Toshizo’s grin didn’t fade.
“Er—well, yes. Sort of.”
“You heard me perfectly, Hayashi. They’re all going to die.” He crossed his legs and swung his tail around. Aya nodded absent-mindedly. For a fleeting moment, everything was tranquil. Then the door was shot aside by a brown-haired mouse with a leopard’s coloring.
“The hell you said I was slacking off for, Aya?”
“Well, weren’t you?” Toshizo was so used to hearing this conversation, and each time it took a different turn. He didn’t really mind their arguing, it let him think uninterruptedly. The mouse with snow-white fur got up and walked across the garden, his black boots swooping the soft, pink petals away. Hayato and Aya turned their heads for a moment. Both agreed, he looked like a sorrowful spirit indeed.
Back at his room, decorated with blue banners and various other trinkets including multiple swords and trophies from vanquished foes. The spring was late and the room was cold. Staring up at the ceiling were Toshizo’s topaz-colored orbs. Many thoughts and plans about how to crush the Rebellion flew through his head. Finally, he sat up from his futon and sighed.
“I’m lost, ain’t I?”

In the dining room were Hayato, Aya and a couple of other Royal Resistance members. Aya was, least said quite pissed off, possibly by Hayato’s constant sipping of sake, or maybe something else. She poked the sticky rice in her bowl with chopsticks made from red wood, wrapped in a vibrant blue satin cloth at the top. She had no appetite.
“Oi, Hayato. Tell me one thing.”
“Hmm, what do you want, Aya?” Hayato’s tone was uninterested as he kept sipping sake from the red cup.
“What do you think we’ll do after we destroy the Rebellion, once again?”
“What’s gotten into you, Aya? Of course we’ll keep kicking the asses of outlaws…. Right? Actually shouldn’t you ask Shirai-sama such things?”
“I would but I know what answer I’ll get, you dumbass.”
“Don’t tell me you’re giving up.”
“Who said I was?!” The naginata master girl shot up from her place, grabbed her weapon and stormed out of the room. Hayato really got on her nerves. She wanted to ask Toshizo – but couldn’t, because of two reasons. She was afraid. Afraid that he’d think she’s backing out of this. Second, the commander had a piercing aura around him. Aya was sure that she wasn’t alone getting butterflies in her stomach whenever he spoke. Or perhaps it was just her? Right, she remembered. A distinct, fuzzy feeling in her chest. It showed up even now. The otherwise fierce Royal Resistance mouse girl was left standing in the hallway, lost in thought.

futon - mattress on the floor they sleep on
sake - rice wine
