The Obon Event: August 12 to 19
The Bon Festival (formally wrote as お盆, Obon) is a Japanese Buddhist holiday celebrated in the late summer, dedicated to paying homage to the spirits of ancestors who have passed away.
Lanterns are hung from homes to guide the spirits of the dead into them. A meal is had, gravestones are cleaned, offerings are presented at home altars. At the end of the holiday, the lanterns hung from the porches are then placed into bodies of water and allowed to float away to guide the spirits back home. Many don their formal dress (kimono and furisode), and have traditional meals.

The gameplay
The map is row of traditional style Japanese homes in which lanterns are scattered throughout -- a la Epiphany map, where pies are scattered. On roofs, on porches, et cetera.
You need to pick up a lantern by pressing space, and then take it to the end of the long, scrolling map where there is a river/body of water. Another click of the spacebar will send it off into the water. The more lanterns sent off and spirits guided to the other side, the more prizes you win.

Prizes for completion
Five lanterns: Respectful Mouse
Ten lanterns: A cartouche, featuring a string of lanterns/lights draped along the edges
Twenty lanterns: Badge, featuring a lantern and a kimono

Various consumables given in between those numbers:
Fireworks
Fraises, between one and five.
Cheese, between one and ten.
Sparkler mouth item: your mouse runs around with a sparkler in it's mouth for a few seconds
Taiko drum: A few second animation where your mouse hits a taiko drum

Shop items
Fur wearing a kimono or furisode
Lantern tail charm
Uchiwa mouth item
