Actually, I don't think there's anything bad about having a "Friend chat" in-game. It's true, we have a chat channel, but just because I want to talk to my friends I don't need to make a chat every single time and invite every person, messaging every person the chat's name would be hard especially when there are a lot of people online.
(It would work just like tribe chat.)
