I do not plan on making one myself, but thought it would be good for future reference.

Fortoresse is still fairly new, but we have had 2 large (not tribe-only) tournaments so far. However, these tournaments have run into some issues during their run, so I was curious what issues people have noticed, and if possible thoughts on how they should be addressed. Even if you haven't seen a problem or have run into something on tournaments held elsewhere, but have something you wish to mention, that's fine too.

This thread can also serve as a place to ask questions on setting up a tournament, as well as asking / suggesting different types of tournaments that can be hosted, or anything else tournament based.

== Important Note ==
General Forum Guideline #17:
Please obtain Sentinel permission to run a contest before creating a thread.
No one likes a contest that's poorly run or fizzles out part way through. To make sure this doesn't happen, we ask that you please ask a Sentinel for permission to run a contest beforehand so that we know that you have adequate preparation. Poorly made contests or ones without permission may get locked.

== Useful Tools ==
  • Tournament Management Site
    • Challonge
    • BinaryBeast
  • Post an IRC / IM / etc in the thread so people can contact you to ask question even outside the game.

== Tips ==
See posts below for more detail / original tip.
  • People may quit. As such it may be helpful to have a list of backup players/teams.
  • Have pre-set match times / dates. While this might make it harder for some people to participate, it it prevents it from being a nightmare to organize, and allows people to show up early.
  • Be proactive with match dates. Once a new pair of teams/players is ready, start offering tentative dates. Once they both accept a date, hold them to it as much as possible.
    • Three/Two strike rule. The unexpected happens, so canceling a match with prior notice should be allowed to a point. No-shows with no advanced notice however should be subject to immediate disqualification.
  • Have backup. Just because you made the tournament doesn't mean others can't host it for you! If possible find a list of people who can facilitate when you're not around to keep things moving.
  • Have clear rules. Make sure you have the rules listed where people can find them, and make them clear and to the point. If you answer someone's question - be it in the thread, in the game, or out of game - make sure to update your thread so everyone knows this answer; this helps avoid needly misunderstandings later on.

A slight porblem I got during my Tournament that people were never on or quit. If just one person from a match does this, move the other player up. If it is both, I really cannot help. Maybe get a replacement for them both?

The no-shows are expect sadly, but I forgot that people may also quit, good point. If there's enough backups, I'd think a replacement for both is fine. If not, It's probably fine to just add 1 replacement for that match and have them auto-win it.

Well of course, your tourney got put down 2 times. Maybe try to be more respectful to snail's "tradition" and make a good tourney.

It wasn't "aimed" at you as much as your issues + the fact the the current tournament isn't over due to different issues made me wonder what things people should keep in mind when making a tournament. The "Important Note" may be a little aimed at you, but it still is something people should know about.

I really don't think we need more tournaments right now, not with how the past few successful ones have gone.. As far as I can tell there doesn't seem to be any sort set times/dates for matches so tournaments end up going on for longer than they should and in general there's a disgusting lack of information and organization.

One of the big things about hosting a tournament would probably be having reliable people available that are able to host matches when you aren't able to make it, instead of prolonging the process of even getting started and leaving fodder in the bracket. Having a second opinion on iffy things too isn't a bad thing either as it can make all the difference sometimes, you never know when someone else might see something you don't.

Dates and Times can make all the difference for someone willing to join or not. Personally I think there should be pre-set time and dates for when matches start so people will have time to show up before hand while having people sign up knowing what they're getting into, but of course this means some time zones will be left out in the dark. Nothing can really be done about that other than favoring specific time-zones for each tournament and trying to keep the rest at least reasonable, since if things are on set path it'll most likely go by faster.

As for people leaving/not showing up during the tournament, just count it as a forfeit and move their opponent on rather than trying to find a replacement for them (unless it's before the tournament has started) or giving the person who can't make it more than one chance to show. This stuff's going to happen quite a lot when there's really nothing on the line in terms of prizes.

Having more information about the rules, how the tournament is going to work and where people can contact you if they have an issue would be nice as all of these are pretty important. Are players allowed specific perks and weapons, what maps are allowed, is it best of 1/3/5/7/etc. Be sure to link important information in the original post (OP) such as the bracket information and what not as players are going to be looking for that specifically, contact information is good too (in-game and other methods).

These are just a few of the big things in my opinion that have bothered me about these tournaments, but hopefully this helps.

Oh I have no time to manage my tourney, so if someone could somehow run it again, or could cancel it that would be great by the way. I can help you get permission if you need it jack

@Shadowwinter: I also agree we don't really need another tournament right now, we should probably wait until the current one is done, and then give some time until the next one. Great points, I tried to summarize them and added them to post. I agree on the pre-set dates and times especially.
