Hello!

Welcome to my profile. It has been fairly empty for a long time, but now it is time for me to tell something about myself. My name is Anythin, I am from the Netherlands and I have been playing Transformice since 2010. I used to play in the NL community regularly, but now I mainly play in room room 3 in the EN community. I am a very competitive person. I do not congratulate other people with their firsts, because I am a sore loser! Don't ask me to translate stuff in Dutch, I am not a teacher. If you want to learn Dutch, then Youtube is your friend! In the other tabs you will find more information about me.

I have a degree in Life Sciences, specializing in Immunology and Cell Biology. I have a broad interest in many scientific fields, but more recently I am focused on Regenerative Medicine and Biotechnology. These fields are relatively new. Their focus lies on improving the quality of life of people by regenerating damaged organs through tissue engineering and molecular biology. Through the use of someone’s own cells, organs can be grown inside or outside the human body. Scientific research is booming, and a lot of different organs are being investigated. Think of blood vessels and heart valves, but also parts of the brain and cartilage. The aim of this research is to eventually be able to create off-the-shelf organs, so that patients don’t have to wait endlessly for organ donors.

What I really like about this field of research is that we are able to program cells in such a way that they do exactly what we want. For example: skin cells can be transformed into stem cells in order to be used in diabetes research, or immune cells can be "trained" to recognize specific types of cancer. I think it is really amazing that humans can influence Mother Nature in such a fundamental way. To be able to do all of this, you have to examine cells on a molecular level. It is fascinating to see how something as small as a single cell can contain so many beautiful mechanisms. Every day we are discovering many life changing things. In history, humans have always expanded their views by thinking bigger and looking up. This resulted in discovering new stars, planets, and galaxies. Today, we have taken a step back and started looking at ourselves. There is a whole galaxy within our cells that we’ve only recently started to discover.

Other than my professional interests, I also have some personal interests. Since a young age, I have always wondered why things are the way they are. Why are all roads in the USA straight? Why do Asians look different from Africans or Europeans? Why does all of Latin America speak Spanish, but Brazil does not? Why is there war in the Middle East? All of these things roll back to one thing: History. All problems and creations of the world today have an origin within history.

More specifically, my interest in history is particularly sparked by the Dutch influence in the world. The Netherlands are a small country today, but we have played a big role in the world’s history. Known as a tolerant and traders nation, we have explored the world for many centuries, and have left an everlasting legacy in many parts of the world. Think of the history of New York, Australia, Indonesia, Surinam and the old Netherlands Antilles, South Africa and Namibia. But lesser known is the Dutch influence in Brazil, Ghana, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Japan. I will spare you the history lesson because we’re not in school, however, I do want to talk a bit more about South Africa.

What once was a tiny settlement on the Cape of Good Hope, became a huge nation in no time. South Africa specifically interests me because of all the historic artifacts that still remember the Dutch influence today. In the first place the language, Afrikaans, which is a daughter language of the Dutch language with influences from many other languages. While there are distinct differences between written Afrikaans and written Dutch, it is fascinating to hear how these differences almost fade away when you hear a conversation between a Dutch person and an Afrikaner person. It is as if you’re speaking to a fellow Dutch person! My fascination for Afrikaans has lead me to discover this Afrikaner musician, Bok van Blerk. Although his style of music is not something I listen to regularly, for some reason I find his songs very intriguing. The combination of Afrikaans and the historical aspect of many of his songs make me like his songs very much (example here). I do not experience this same feeling when listening to other Afrikaner artists though (although I must admit it’s still funny to hear their particular accents sometimes).

Second, the many Dutch city names remind you of the massive Dutch influence in South Africa. Bloemfontein, Potchefstroom, Nelspruit, Stellenbosch and Johannesburg make it sound like you are wandering around somewhere in the Netherlands. However, the flat, boring riverdelta of the Netherlands cannot compete against the beauty of South Africa. The amazing mountainous landscapes throughout the country are from a different planet. Since the Tafelberg in Cape Town would be the first thing that comes into people’s mind when thinking of South Africa, I’d like to mention other beautiful places like the vineyards in the Stellenbosch valley, the Blyde River canyon, and the beautiful Pretoria with its monuments, parks and jakaranda trees. I have a deep desire to visit South Africa some time in the future, because I think it’s one of the most amazing places in the world.

Another thing I like to do often is listening to music! Music is my life, I wake up with it and I go to bed with it. Without music, life would be a lot less fun. To keep things short, I mostly listen to Electronic Dance Music (EDM). However, this is a broad term which consists of a lot of sub-genres. Sparked by the legendary Dutch DJs Armin van Buuren, Tiësto and Hardwell, I like to listen to various genres like Trance, Dance, (Electro, Progressive, Deep, Future) House, but also to the more alternative genres like UK garage, Drum’n’Bass (DnB), some dubstep and electronica. I also seem to have a thing for 90’s Eurodance, dancehall and reggaeton. Since a lot of these genres are slowly becoming mainstream, I also enjoy a lot of Pop music which have influences of one of these genres. It is difficult for me to name specific artists or bands which I find awesome, because my interests are song-oriented rather than artist-oriented. Artists often have a wide range of songs, but only a few of them stand out and are good, while the rest of their music is average. If I had to give an example of the music I currently listen to, I suppose linking you to the Youtube page of SubSoul (here) or Selected. (here) would be a good start. In the Music tab, you will find a selection of songs from different genres which are among my favorites.

Lastly, I love watching all kinds of sports. Although my interests may vary from time to time, I tend to follow a broad variety of sports including cycling (road), speed skating, swimming, gymnastics, darts and football. As a chauvinistic person, I like to follow Dutch people in their endeavors for success. I actively support the regional football club – VVV-Venlo – who are currently playing in the Dutch Eredivisie. Besides that, I also follow all European and World Championships Football.

Transformice

As mentioned in the first tab, I have been playing Transformice since 2010. Since then, I have had the opportunity to meet many new people as well as make some good friends. My Transformice experience can be separated into three different periods: The beginning, period of being Transformice staff, and the post-staff period.

It all started off in room 15 on the EN server. Upon the introduction of tribes, I joined a tribe called Prololols, which consisted of room 15 regulars. This tribe slowly died due to arguments and eventually split off in several other tribes, one of which was created by Verbatim and was called the Limehat Squad. It’s not hard to guess that we used the limehat to identify ourselves. This tribe didn’t last very long, and eventually was merged into what is now known as the tribe 15 to Life. After some time, the NL community came up and I started to interact with other Dutch players more and more. While 15 to Life played in the EN community, I became more and more distant from them because I started playing in the NL community a lot more. At the same time, my activity on Transformice started to drop because I had other obligations in real life. Altogether this resulted in a break from 15 to Life. I started playing on guest accounts more and didn’t want to interact with people for a while. At one point, my interest rekindled and again I started playing more in the NL community. Having been in an intermediate tribe at the time, I was invited by Minniemoussy to join the tribe Too Cute To Be Real. I figured I had nothing to lose, and accepted this offer. This tribe allowed me to make friends with people who I still talk to and hang out with today.

During my time in Too Cute To Be Real, the NL community slowly but surely grew and with that the forum community also grew. Having more time on my hands than before, I actively engaged into discussions regarding the game and the community. Making more friends along the way, at one point I was encouraged to apply to become a staff member for the NL community. I had never thought I would get the opportunity to help out in an online game, and I could never imagine what it was like to witness a game behind the scenes.

This brings us to the second period in my Transformice experience. The best thing of being a member of staff is that you actually can make a difference. I was given the powers to direct the community and try to make it a fun place for all. At the time, the NL community was infested with hate speech and constant fighting (which totally doesn’t happen in any other community, cough). I am proud to say that slowly but surely the community changed. Troublemakers were taken care of, and the NL community became an example of what a community could be with a fully functioning moderation team. Of course I didn’t do this all by myself. I enjoyed working together with people like Pkj, Minniemoussy, Gogoninja, Jeroenm and Xaemus to make Transformice a fun game to play. During this time, I had always been a member of Too Cute To Be Real. However, an incident lead the entire NL moderation team to resign from its position, and together with this transition I moved to the tribe Crossing Borders. Being in the same tribe for so long, I had to adjust to this new tribe. Again, I got to know more (Dutch) players, but it didn’t feel the same as Too Cute To Be Real. Slowly I realized Too Cute To Be Real was my family, which made me decide to go back where I belonged.

After we had collectively resigned from our staff positions, I remained active and committed to the NL community. I felt like I could still contribute to the community like I did before, which made me apply to be a member of staff once again. Thankfully I was accepted back into the staff team, and together with Pkj, Jeroenm and Lemodile we rebuilt the staff team to what it is today. As I got more accustomed to being a moderator, I took on more responsibilities and became more involved with the organization behind the scenes, as the staff team kept growing as new communities were opened. A personal highlight in this was the organization of a community-wide Christmas event, in which staff members from several communities worked together to bring a unique Christmas event to as many communities as possible. At the same time, being a member of staff started to take more and more of my time. As much as I enjoyed working with the team and solving problems, I realized that more often than not it was impossible to overcome certain problems. It started to become more and more of a burden to log in, having to face all these unsolvable problems. Ultimately I had decided for myself to resign from all staff positions. As much as I liked helping the game as a staff member, resigning helped me find new joy in playing the game in its simplest form.

And that is the third and current period of my Transformice experience. Too Cute To Be Real still exists, and together with my tribe members and other people I’ve got to know along the way I enjoy playing the game and everything it offers. Thank you for visiting my profile, and who knows maybe we’ll see each other in-game.
