And also i am going to show you how to make banners in Pixlr

•To create a banner base, choose "Open Pixlr Editor (Advanced)" to get started.A pop up with some options will appear. Click “Create a new image” to open and start a new project.Put the height and width and click transpernt okay.
Now to make an cool looking background just click the "Gradient" then choose any Gradient fill of your wish.The take your mouse click and drag your mouse.Here you go now you can see an cool Gradient background.

•Now we have made our background now lets change the size of the background.
Go to edit --- Click "Free transform" or just press Ctrl+T.Now you can change the size of your background and after you change its size just click anywhere an box will appear just press "okay".Here we go we have changed the background size

Now we will but an image so it looks like an banner.
Go to Layer --- Click "open image as layer/opn image as Url".
Now click the image and drag it to the background and put it.You can also change its size by the same "Step 2" i am going to put it half outside
Now its looking like an banner

Now just we need to put text as an banner will not be called banner till it does not have any text.
Go to Tool bar in your left --- Click "A" or just press "T"
Click in the area in which you want to put text type the text
OR
At all the text will look normal if we want something cool then go to this site - http://cooltext.com/
then to put the image text just do same as the "Step 3"

You can add more pictures so it looks better.We are done now only thing you need to do is "save it"
Go to File --- Click "Save" or just press Ctrl + S

I dont know what is software but i know Pixlr :P

The phase in which u say..Adobe Photoshop is not free is right..but one can try its demo version with in-built help instructions if one likes to create animations and multimedia related needs...it is really good, try the demo version..don't worry the demo-trial version is free but is only available for 40 days.. :)

- Softwares for photoshop are very hard to use :/ but if you pro it can make super banner.There are some usefull sites which can help you
