I've heard quite a bit of talk about this subject recently. And judging by how many people at my school strave themselves for a perfect body, I believe that Barbie dolls could be the reason possibly. Although it may be society as well. (No wonder i'm not too concerned about my image, I never played with dolls :P) |

i think they're just a toy and can be interpreted any way you want them to be :) of course good parenting would be awesome, if parents told their girls who play with barbies that they don't have to look like that to be pretty |

While I never really was a big barbie enthusiast myself, my mom is huge collecter of them. Skippers, vintage clothing, vintage barbie houses, vintage wallpaper and boxes that came with the boxes, you name it. Even then they didn't really affect me, I just saw them as dress-up dolls with nice houses that smell good. It's really more of a matter of perception than of instantanious danger; Children will see them how they want to, and most will see them as nothing but mere toys to play with unless their parents are bad, or if their perception is different from others. (Although I think barbies may be to blame with my obsession with dress-up games, haha) |

it wasn't even until like the 60s that being thin/petite started to be considered attractive for women by society |

Blackstarpew a dit : You're not counting: Pressure from society, bad parenting, harassers, the media, and basically jerks of the world who think everyone should be anorexic-skinny. Barbies are just a doll from the perception of most. |

Haruhitastic a dit : Haruhitastic a dit : I wouldn't be so quick to say 'not at all'. You don't really know her experiences, maybe she did kinda assume that barbie's figure is what a ~perfect girl~ should look like etc. Anywho, I see a lot of the toys and shows my 2 year old cousin plays with/watches and urk. I know people who grew up watching disney movies and playing with princess toys and junk, who are completely convinced they're going to find some sort of 'prince charming' and want to be treated like a princess. In a survey in my psychology class, all but one girl in the class said they'd tell their daughter they're going to find a prince charming, etc. I feel some of the uhh movies and junk (there are barbie movies, right?) that kids watch give them unrealistic expectations. I mean, it doesn't have that effect on everyone. But at a young age, people can be rather impressionable. Haruhitastic a dit : There are a lot of Barbie movies and I think a tv series and junk. Not just the dolls. |

Ysaika a dit : right, that's true. Igotta think twice before I open my mouth. But even so what you said right there, it's not only Barbie's fault. It's in general just, girls only being princesses and skinny and falling in love et cetera. When really there's a lot more than that. |

Haruhitastic a dit : Oh, I absolutely don't think it's purely the fault of just the dolls. It's but one of many things that can badly influence young people. I wasn't trying to imply it was. |

Ysaika a dit : basically what i was trying to say too but then vullo ninja'd me heheh at the same time they can be nice toys to play with as a child or an adult some people argue though that these dolls could be an influence to girls and what not (although the major majority comes from media and others) |
