SCAFFOLDING!
disclaimer: this is building theory, not about saving mice
also this is mostly applicable in divine and not normal/hardmode.

A long time ago, I mentioned scaffolding briefly in a previous thread, almost in passing. Since then, I'd guess maybe more than half of all my builds use scaffolding in some way or another. Most of the time they're as simple as a single box or a plank+anvil. It lets you build over gaps you'd normally have to build explicit support for... and that's fine!
But it also means most of your builds end up looking the same: the same old plank+box extender. You can use scaffolding instead and then put your supports after your solid build extension.

Here's an example:

Typical H base with a box (or a plank if you'd rather) for extension

the scaffolding solution instead:

then we continue as so:

..the fun part of pulling the curtain and removing the scaffolding after:

and our final product:

See how we switched the order of our solids and our supports?
The solid objects go first, then the support. It's a little bit of extra work but sometimes it allows you to do really cool stuff with very irregular bases. Here's some more scaffolding examples. Sometimes they're a whole extra build before your final one settles into place under it.

Really unsafe and precarious scaffolding, would be a problem if it didn't have to go down the drain later anyway:

3 plank splint with boxes on ends fits precisely ->

been loving these freestanding planks lately
as long as they don't move horizontally, they don't fall

Nice! the rest kinda builds itself
though I see even more opportunity to use scaffolding here. let's see..

some boxes for the first plank, more boxes for the second

and after cannoning everything away:

It takes a little bit of an eye to properly see where scaffolding is best used but it flips normal building on its head a little bit and allows you to build more macro than usual.
This game allows a lot of out-of-the-box thinking and I'd love to see more creativity in a game that is so open to it. :)

So what do you think? Is it just extra building for no payoff? Got any of your own tech you want to share?
I have a bunch more I've been thinking about writing about but sometimes the tech or concept feels too small in itself to do a whole writing about. If you guys want something, though, I got some thoughts on the following that I could write about:

  • ~ phasing ~: how you can spawn inside grounds/your own build and how that is helpful sometimes (spooky topic)
  • * runeholds and bloonboxes *: how to ignore that gravity exists. scaffolding without a ground under!
  • % rope bridges in full %: sometimes you skip 90% of support altogether (cursed topic)
  • ?? forcing through center ice on symmetrical maps ??: okay, this one tech has only happened like twice or thrice but it's really cool
  • & swag supports and its setups &: mini-scaffolds to reverse solid and support, sometimes single, sometimes chained
Let me know in the replies if any of that could catch your interest.

+1 swag supports and rope bridges, but I think you should write about all of your ideas (not service) because they're not small at all

+1 I was building a map and this came to mind and so I gave it a try and it worked like a charm. Thanks sham!
