Whenever I think of Doctor Who, the first thing that comes to my mind is this picture that I once saw on the internet. (Not hating it though) |

(Necroposting is okay if I'm saying something relevant to the topic, right?) Is it just me, or has the show been getting worse with this new series? Possible spoilers ahead. The most noticeable thing about it is that the new companion, Bill, has no real defining character traits. She's gay(Which I have nothing against). That's about it. (The only time she seemed to have any personality at all was during the monk arc, but that ended up being irrelevant when it ended.) I mean, the writers could have made her character have some actual depth, but it feels to me like they were so focused on diversity that they forgot to make her interesting. I may have hated Clara as a companion, but at least she was a proper character(Being a pathological liar and all). In any case, I think the writers ruined Missy/The Master too, by giving her a sense of guilt/remorse/empathy rather than leaving her gloriously psychopathic like in her/his previous appearances. On top of all that, I haven't noticed any underlying connection between most of the season and what I assume to be the climax(Previous episode + the one tomorrow). In older seasons, there were actually clues hidden between episodes that lead up to the finale(Badwolf, Saxon being mentioned during Martha's run, Doctor-Donna, Riversong+Crack in the universe+Institute+etc, Impossible girl), But from what I can tell, this season is just "Oh, that happened." The writing's just been getting lazier in general, it seems. As soon as one particular episode arc is done, everything goes back to normal, and none of the characters develop in any way. Even The Doctor's blindness, which could have made for an interesting handicap during the rest of the season, or at least given him the opportunity for sweet lizard eyes, vanished like a fart in the wind after a couple of episodes. The only connectivity at all has been Missy existing, but even then, not really. The show in general just isn't as good anymore, and I can't wait to see if the next doctor is going to be any better. |

Nibblerrat a dit : I agree about Bill, I know the writers want to make the show as diverse as possible - but having a token gay person is just insulting. Rather than focusing on her personality, it's just ''i'm gay''. If I was gay, I would find it insulting because LGBT people have much more about them than just their sexuality and it doesn't define them at all. And that joke about the rug in first episode she was in was disgusting. Tasteless as heck. The companions recently are dreadful, and the writers can't write strong female companions. They always have to be some ditzy damsel in distress with a childlike wonder, pardon Donna. But Donna wasn't really playing a character much, it was just Catherine Tate playing Catherine Tate. I don't mind Catherine Tate so that was fine. But they always write female companions like some blonde scientist assistant. Reminiscent me of Inga from the Young Frankenstein. I'm also disappointed about why they changed the master to missy, although Michelle Gomez is good - John Simm is amazing. I remember watching him in Life on Mars too, and he is really good. Michelle doesn't really capture the utter madness that John Simm did. The writing is lazy, but I think why there is no underlying connection is because this series will be the last of SM before Chibnall takes over as the showrunner, and Chibnall wants to start anew with a new doctor. There's rumours of him axing Bill too, which I wouldn't mind. They want to contain everything in this series into this series, and they don't want any plots to remain after the series duration. That's why it's all crammed into one little bundle. I don't really like the episodes that Chibnall wrote, to be honest. Although RTD wasn't good at writing female companions and his stories were at times a bit cheesy, I enjoyed his stories much much better than Chibnall's ''42'' and ''Dinosaurs on a spaceship''. I agree about the series being bad recently, I can't get into it at all. Clara and Bill annoy me. I used to watch this show quite a lot, but now I'll just skip episodes or change the channel and then maybe watch the episode in a couple or weeks or whatever. I refused to watch some of the episodes that Clara was in because they were just so poor. I remember there was an Christmas episode, and nobody in my household knew what was going on in the plot. We had to look it up on some geeky fanboy blog page to see what happened - Christmas episodes should be lighthearted fun, they shouldn't just be able to be understood by obsessive Doctor Who fans. |

The ending to the finale was disappointing. The masters were great, but John Simm is always great..however, I felt like they kind of didn't use him and Missy as much as they could have and blew out of proportion the role that Simm was going to have in the final. Pond Lady was....uh, no. I don't ever want to hear of her again. Michelle Gomez and Peter Capaldi really did perform well. I was slightly confused as to what Bill said to The Doctor at the end though, I don't really know why she needed to remind him that she was gay when they were just about to die at the hands of the Cybermen. ''You know how I'm usually about women and kind of people my own age. '' ''Yeah?'' ''Glad you knew that.''. My first impression was that it was Bill hinting that she had something for the Doctor or that it was setting up for when she went off with Pond Lady, but many people are saying that it's hinting towards the next doctor being female. Fuck no. |
