i play mania a lot and i main 4k, so here's this:
stepmania skins are good for 4k especially, so if you're looking to main 4k, go for it. otherwise, i'd suggest O2Jam skins or something with big, bulkier notes, so it's easier to read. also, use F3 and F4 to change the scroll speed to something comfy for you to play with.

i have a few skin recommendations for osu!mania if you'd like them, and i can PM you (or anyone else for that matter) the dropbox links. for osu!mania, being able to read the notes comfortably is important, and since i think the stepmania skins are laggy for me, i just use O2Jam and it works fine! it really depends on personal preference, but it does depend on how many keys you play with.

obviously, playing for 4k keys isn't always easy if you work up to harder difficulties, so don't feel like you absolutely have to do 7k or 8k or whatever to rank up once you hit a certain point. trust me, many people are just fine and comfy with 4k and they're high in rankings! osu is intended to be fun, so make sure you don't overcomplicate it or stress yourself out over something silly.

TL;DR - stepmania skins are fine and feel free to PM me if you have questions because i'm scarily obsessed with osu!mania

e: also, don't forget that you can change which keys you play with (and that goes for all modes)! if DF/JK isn't comfortable for you, pick a new set of keys. i play with AS/NM, but be careful that you can press all keys at once since some beatmaps require that.
ghosting is something i struggled with momentarily before i realized it's because i don't have the best keyboard and can only press a few keys at once, so i had to find a combination that worked for me. if you're looking for a mechanical keyboard for gaming that is actually half decent, look for one with anti-ghosting

I play with the default skin for osu!mania (i got used to it) but i'm looking forward to o2jam/stepmania skins, they seem more comfortable to play, i play osu!mania too, but i'm trying to play 7k because it's really fun to play
i don't play for ranking, just for fun o/ (unless it's taiko, i got obssesed with rankings and stuff :c)

Yep, im agree - there's a lot skin you can find. obviously, not even arrow, there's circle, star, even weird shape such as fruit or taiko skin lol.
using fixed is ALMOST NEEDED in mania, im using mostly fixed 26. Only in mania bpm isnt affected to whole song if using fixed.
btw, im using circle one and using mixed skin (you know create skin is easy if you understand).

As all rounder (STD still noob tho), taiko sure use stamina, especially those stream. but, do you realize taiko note isnt that much compared to mania <ofc 4k>(in same SR). taiko bm 4 minute 5-6* average arround 2000-3000 note, while mania can surpass it easily with arround 2 minute song. im not joking, thats why im learn taiko since i can't keep up my stamina on mania xD
Taiko example : Babymetal - Road of resistance 6.32* - 5:09

Mania example : Eternal Drain - 6.38* - 1:59


Mania require stamina and less read (mostly reflexes)
Taiko require less stamina but much more read (still manage to read those 1/3-1/8)
Still hardest mode is Std.
