I should re-watch the series sometime, I can't even remember mudbending. Also, lavabending was a thing, it was only done by the avatars because they associated "firebending" with earthbending.

One of my happiest childhood's memories is when I watched with my entire family a full 48h marathon of this. Thanks Nickelodeon. And still can't believe I didn't saw the whole series though I watched the final battle, how embarrassing.

It is much different as Korra is the new avatar, as I've heard.

Lava bending isn't avatar only and it goes under earth bending.
