Joeballbags a dit : I am extremely confused, this doesn't make any sense, the first choice is yes, but then says cussing should stop, then the 2nd choice is no, explaining it's bad it's basically asserting cussing should not be allowed, people should have the freedom to choose, which you're not giving them that freedom. ________ As for the subject at hand, language includes cuss words, and cuss words are gaining popularity because people are starting to see them as not controversial, correct even. look at this for example from a perspective of someone who wants to study linguistics, it's all a natural part of language evolution, I imagine in the near future people will use even the N word and no one would raise an eyebrow because of how evolution takes place, so long as the newer generation uses and is comfortable with a word it will become the next norm and will win out, because ultimately, the younger generation has more power in terms of what is the norm than the older generation. edit: for clarity, when I say "the N word" I'm talking about the people who use it to mean "friend, comrade, buddy, etc" not the racist version, I think both are really bad uses but you get what I'm saying. Smartiewolfs a dit : thanks smartie, i love talking about language, it's all so beautiful, the diversity of it, it's why I want to be a linguist, and cuss words are no different from language, they are infact a part of language, and as such, something I'd love to study someday as well |

Haruhitastic a dit : Ofc things change, did you know "Peanut galleries" used to refer to black slaves in the upper deck of a ship? Did you know "Eenie meenie miney moe" used to be a racist nursery rhyme but now isn't just from a few simple changes? Evolution in language, regardless of how racist anything is occurs all the time, people at school now have to be reminded that "jap" is a racist word and shouldn't be used as a shortening of the word Japanese, such is proof that in some time or another, there will be no one who will even remember this word was racist, I even went to my friends Mio, Aika, and Joe, and they said they never even heard that word before. There are hundreds of words that used to mean extremely rude things that now don't at all, this also applies for the N word, whites are now starting to use it even to mean buddy, sure the origin of it is racist, but what I'm trying to show is that evolution occurs, and changes things, including cuss words. Even the most extreme cuss words such as the N word. So, to prove your claim, I'd like you to list some words or phrases that were before the 1800's that were any bit bigoted, and still are today. Mousechris a dit : Did you know that's a lie? "A peanut gallery was, in the days of vaudeville, a nickname for the cheapest (and the rowdiest, ugliest and least desired) seats in the theater, the occupants of which were often known to heckle." Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peanut_gallery As well, there is no proof it is racist. Get your facts straight. Mousechris a dit : No straight up source for this either outside of a few people who grew up hearing it. Find me a proper source and maybe we'll discuss it then. Mousechris a dit : Yes, because three high school students totally make up for the entirety of a race of people?. For the record, the slur you're referencing was/is only used in areas in which the Japanese are the minority. Of course three kids directly from Japan who never spent time outside of the country except recently wouldn't know it? Mousechris a dit : They shouldn't, and congratulations for missing my point. Regardless of how it is meant, it is a reclaimed slur and you nor any other white person should be using it. Full stop. Only Afro-Americans/Blacks should be using the N word in any context. Anyway. This debate isn't suited for here. PM me if you care to continue it. All I'll say however is if you're wanting to start studying linguistics, you've got a loooong way to go. a dit : That just proves that words change over time like I'm saying in here it actually talks about theatres... but specifies it was referring to african americans, I very much am checking my facts, and getting them strait as for Eenie meenie miney moe Anyone opening this link should be advised because it doesn't censor the N word a dit : I'm not missing the point, the point is people are getting strangely comfortable with the word. African Americans are now starting to call and be called by white friends in this way, not as a racial slur, but as a way to say friend, and while I do not approve that anyone, white or black, should use the word, I cannot deny this is happening. And yeah this debate actually is suited for here, it's about the evolution of cuss words, if they should be accepted or not. And I do have a long way to go with studying linguistics, but not in the manner you're putting it in. |

I come from the west coast, I don't know if it happens on other areas in the world, but it is getting pretty popular here, I don't use it myself because I don't see why anyone should, but I constantly hear it, pretty sure it's the result of celebrities using the word, like Snoop Dogg, you can hear it in a lot of popular rap songs too. |

Instead of the regular ugly words, we all should be saying things like "CRIMINEY" and "BLUMMING" because those sound nice. -P- |
