Well soap has alkaline properties, and it isn't really 'clean', when it 'cleans' your dirty stuff, it neutralizes the acidic stuff that has collected on it and makes it smell nice at the same time. Dirt is somewhat acidic, I guess.

It can be clean, it can be dirty. It could be a brand new bar of soap or a bar of soap covered in somebody's icky body hair.
