This lets you get information about players so programmers can use it in their own programs and websites, just like CheeseForMice checks player's statistics for their leaderboards.

Oh great, API is down again. How dare you share API when it's not even close to stable? I wouldn't like to see other sites have issues with their revenue like CFM just did, because of the API being super unstable.

The CFM API was done with Transformice Protocol, that is not now supported. So your argument is invalid.
