speaking about pets, we used to own a few (a buncha fishes, 1 turtle, and 2 budgies in that order) but we weren't that great at taking care of them and if i have to be honest.. i beat myself up because of it sometimes

Well, what can I say? My relatives had a turtle as well and every time my family would visit them, my sister and I would poke its shell to see its head retreat inside. We didn't know anything since we were so young and I'm sure it didn't appreciate that at all. As if that's not bad enough, it didn't seem to be taken care of well. They hardly changed the water and the tank was way too small. I'm not sure how old it was but eventually it died. Anyways, it's too bad once you realize what you had and could have done, but at least you know you were in the wrong so that next time (if there ever is one), you'd do better to take care of them.

strangely enough, that's the exact same story that happened with our turtle, except that our poor fella died due to dehydration. just to give some context, me and my bro were pretty young at that time and its not like our parents knew any better than us at taking care of animals. i also know that young age is no excuse for neglecting your pets either, so it makes me cringe just how irresponsible i used to be since i kinda contributed to the problem, but needless to say now that i'm more mindful of animals, i'll rather let those experiences be an example of what not to do if i ever decide to own another pet in the future.

ah man i know, but i guess that's what being a reckless child is. omg
and sure thing. if and when i do get the opportunity to raise a pet, it'd most likely be a cat. just not doing it here cause my mom has a severe phobia of cats :'(

Yeah, unfortunately loving your pets is just not enough, you need to be able to take good care of them as well. However, mistakes have to be made before you truly learn what you should have done (or not, if you did something you shouldn't have). What's in the past doesn't just stay in the past, you definitely take the lessons you learn with you to do better as a person along the way. So please don't beat yourself down for not treating your pets the way you should because I feel like it's a somewhat common thing for some families to not know how to take care of their pets properly. Yes, it's not an excuse but you're learning and that's better than someone who keeps making the same mistakes over and over again. Gosh, that reminds me of my old piano teacher...she would get a cat every time her previous one died because she didn't know how to feed them properly. They all seemed to be underfed.
