My opinion:
Maybe they realized that they did not actually improve much of the game over the last year(s) but instead came up with updates that many players did not approve making the game less enjoyable by shifting the main principles of the game.
Going back now seems to be impossible because all the updates are in the game now and turning it over again would cause a huge disturbance among the player base so all they can now is giving out free cheese...

Although I agree that many of the updates have been for getting money (which makes sense since they are a company) the shaman skills update for example was not really made in this manner. Anyhow it also does not mean that it was a good update. I suppose what bothers me most is that they don't care to react to serious comments, especially to the last 'speed/fairness' update. But heck, I'm not playing this game actively enough anymore to really care...

Just decided to throw in a cent, but I don't get why some of you are all, "just a way to get more players" and annoyed about it. I'm pretty sure most games want more players to play their game and it's a completely understandable want. Plus most games also have a referral system with rewards.
