They are NOT gay actually. It's just a thing that started ages ago (2011) and it's still running... And it's about these two and by now people went a little too far. On Tumblr, there's this account called "Distantnoises" and writes those fanfics that are sorta gayish about the same exact people. In fact, THIS YEAR, Simon Gallup (the answer to your question Emilyetc, ofc. you don't know them) turned 53 years old and Robert Smith turned 54 so it's obvious they are from the 80's. Their band is THE CURE (yeaahhhh.. ;_;), so...

Robert is married since 1988 to his CHILDHOOD sweetheart, and Simon has 3 kids... It's just a thing people made up ages ago, and I have nothing to do with it but I think it's soooo cute, dammit! ;w;

I suppose it's fanservice but making it more... hmph... realistic.
I really like it how stars do fanservices, they're just trying to impress their fans. I like it how these guys do it, too.
