Are they the same? I'm positive that interpretation vary, but how Atelier 801 breaks them apart?

Consider that the messages below are sent in a fast succession, by the same user, with nothing in between.

For me, this is a spam, but also a flood:

And even this, since the chat gets flooded, despite all:

So, every spam is also a flood, but not all flood is a spam. I apologize if this might be consideres off-topic, but since we have a report tool for "spam / flood", knowing them well would benefit everyone.

Flood is when massive amount of letters are being sent instantly. This is more commonly abused with Chinese letters since they are more detailed that it can affect ping to make you lag shortly.


Spam is when messages are being sent out repedeatly. Probably can take relic trade room as an example where you can see it happening left and right.

spam literally means unnecesary message so for ex but not limited: "dfsgdsfgdfg" is considered spam, flood is when youre flooding the chat, so repeatedly sending any message, spammy or not

This is how I define the two as well. Although, some people consider them interchangeable. When it comes to punishing players who do either of these, they are both treated the same, which is why flood/spam are one option for reporting instead of two different ones.
