why not They led me outside, like a sacrificial ritual. I knew the slaughter was coming, but I, as the lamb, could not do anything. Laughter echoed through my ears, like a haunted amusement park in my ears, reminding me of the misfortune I had. Why me? Why did they have to pick me? And as though they were driven insane, they held a lighter up to my lips. “Smell it,” they said, and I coughed, the air lodged deep within my throat. They had taunted me, and they would not do it again. I would escape into the darkness once again, and they would not try to catch me. Running-and running once more, twisting-turning,escaping, freedom. Breathing quickly, breathing in the smell of smoky air. I felt that I couldn’t rid myself of the smoke-filled air, and, looking back, I felt a shock as smoke spun a web towards the sky. I felt a bit of rain touch my cheeks, and huffed my way out of the cold. I see nothing, I claimed. Nothing at all. I see nothing. I was just walking. I chant these words in my mind, and walked even faster. The sound of my feet hitting the ground, pounding constantly. I hoped I didn’t do anything bad, as I didn’t dare look behind me anymore. And then I heard the sirens. The sound screamed, with their high tones blaring out from a brightly-colored truck. There was now a light rain, like a fog. I closed my eyes, but all I could imagine were the blaring lights of the firetruck, the red. I covered my ears with my hands, but all I could hear were the high screams of the sirens. There really was no escape. I suddenly felt colder than ever. I pulled my coat closed. I shivered and sneezed. I ran, towards home, towards the warmth. Perhaps this never happened, this was a dream. Yes, indeed, this was a dream. I closed my eyes. I needed to breathe. And then I needed to see something. Opening my eyes, and focusing on the surrounding environment, I quickly looked at the first thing I saw-a black cat. I saw this. I see this. What? There was a fire? I was only looking at the cat. Yes, I understand, but I didn’t see any fire until I looked up and heard the sirens. I didn’t know there was a fire. I nodded firmly. I was looking at the cat. Just looking at the cat for the whole time. If anyone questions me, I was just looking at the cat. Just looking. Within minutes, I was thoroughly convinced that I did not see the fire at all. The rain fell harder, and I pulled the hood of my jacket over my head, breath turning into frost. I smelled smoke, and ran faster, feet pounding at the sidewalk. I reached my house, and took off my jacket, and sat down to dinner, immediately encountering my parents, who asked me how I was doing. I only smiled, stating that I was only alright, that they needn't worry. I ate my dinner in silence, and slipped off to bed. They held a funeral for her the next day. It was extremely sudden, and my parents patted my shoulder, assuring me that everything would be fine. And I supposed it was, and I truly felt sorry for those girls. I didn’t really know them well, and I didn’t see the murder up close, so I’m not sure what had happened. It must have been really bad. And then I saw the lighter. It was the lighter that had burned her. I approached it, sensing in it something that I could learn. And as I touched it, I felt a strange feeling. I wanted to flick that switch on the lighter, and see the fire, and then, I heard the click-I had done it. The fire burned brightly, even though it was small. I sniffed it, and then I became impaled with all the true events of that day. Because they were all about me. I hadn’t been slacking off, or anything that day. I had watched someone flick this switch on that day. I heard that same click. I felt the urge to keep the lighter, and down I flew, down the stairs, descending into the rain, down into my own fears, and up, back up to the faces of the police that greeted me with stern looks. “Miss, why are you holding that lighter?” I had no answer for them. And then it suddenly dawned on them. “Could she possibly be---” I nodded. They took me away, into their car. I hear them speaking to my parents, and I want to reach out to my parents, to call out for help, that I was innocent. But I know I’m not. I could imagined their pained expressions, and I shook my head. I shouldn’t worry about it. As the car rides by, I see a cat. It was a black cat. I give it a little wave, as it turned, head held high, back into the darkness of the alley. . The policemen patted me on the head, and sat me down in a chair. I saw chains on the wall, but they were not for me. The room has a door. All other human beings left the room and locked the door, leaving me inside. I feel trapped, I feel trapped and useless. It was then that I drew a conclusion: If I had that lighter, I can get out. The lighter was outside the room, most likely. I would do anything to be free. I pounded on the door with my fists. I kicked it. I threw all my weight on it, to no avail. I cried, I screamed. And then I drew another conclusion. I was a kid; they wouldn’t put me into some extreme place. They would open the door to give me food. It took a few hours, but sure enough, someone arrived, carrying a tray. It was then, that I bolted fully. I barely touched the door frame, when the person caught me on the arm. “Whoa, don’t want you getting out, do we? Don’t worry, you won’t be alone soon.” The person they sent to join me was a psychologist. She asked me a couple questions, and it was hard to answer each one. There were the typical things, like “What’s your favorite color?” to which I curtly responded with a “Red” She obviously took this as a sign of madness, or at least a mental disorder. Her next question was also an obvious one. “ The third question was what froze my train of thought. “Why..Why did you commit such a murder?” I may have heard her voice tremble a bit. I don’t clearly remember, I was sure that the cat was all I saw. Was this truly not the case? Of course not, you idiot. You did something. That’s right. I knocked a lighter out of her hand. I heard the flick of the fire, and ran. I ran and ran. I didn’t do anything wrong, did I? Did I? I heard a scratching noise, and I saw that the lady was writing something down on a piece of paper. I realized that I had said everything out loud. Oops. “Interesting..” she murmured. I was let out a couple hours later, back to my crying family, back to our old, red car. I glanced at the lighter, as I passed it in the hallway of the station. I made sure that no one saw me, and I successfully palmed the object into my sleeve. My parents were relieved to find out that I hadn’t done anything, that I was just traumatized by the thought of lighting a fire. This wasn’t the truth, however. I had overcome the wall. The lighter had become my best friend. As I stand in the corner of the house, I flicked the switch on the lighter. I smiled, and laughed. When I saw the flickers of a flame, my laughter grew even louder. But it was a small laugh, one that was undetectable, heard only by me. Perhaps it was a mental laugh as well. No one would ever know that it would be me again. |
