Well, you see all these threads asking who they are and how they became NPC's in the game and other things so I thought I'd make a detailed thread about Elise and Papaille.

Well, Elise and Papaille are sort of the mascots of TFM, they are permanently situated in Room 801 and they are NPC characters.

The mice were named after the NPCs. When Atelier 801 opened up they received two mice as gifts for office pets. They held a competition to name the mice, and in the end Elise and Papaille were chosen as a reference to the NPCs.

It also used to be possible for people to open the shop by clicking Papaille but this feature is no longer functioning.

In Room 801, Elise used to sleep and Papaille would cry by her side.


This is because Elise died in 2011, she was portayed as asleep because she is now in a 'peaceful sleep'.
She died because she had an incurable disease, so the vet injected her and she experienced a painless death so that she would no longer suffer.

Melibellule also drew some artwork as a memorial tribute to Elise.


You've probably seen it around in avatars and on the forums etc.

Melibellule confirmed on Twitter than Papaille had died peacefully in his sleep shortly after Elise passed away.

Cfmbot also has a little command for Elise and Papaille.
If you whisper Cfmbot saying Elise, it will respond with 'I think she's about to kiss Papaille *squeal*'


If you whisper Cfmbot saying Papaille, it will respond with 'Papaille grows tired of Elise's incessant blabbering'


In game. there is also a tombstone decoration dedicated to Elise.


Nowadays, you can see Elise and Papaille standing upright with the new speculated hand items. Previously the suggestion of items held in the hand was rejected, but now it looks like it could happen because it is being tested on them.


You can also see Papaille in the Christmas 2013 event map.


A new title, «Papaille Noel» was created for the event too.

Sorry we never told about Papaille's death, but it was to be expected since those white mice life span don't last much more than 18 months... Papaille's death was less brutal than Elise, as he simply went less and less active, so we kinda knew he hit a limit. Then one morning, he just didn't come out of his cotton-nest.
He was a joyous and active little fella. In his memory, I uploaded a small video captured with my phone of his grand schemed architectural plans : whenever we filled his toilet-room with tissue and hay, he would move everything out of it in various places where he liked it the most.

^ Yeah, our colleagues gave us those two mice when we left Ankama to found Atelier 801, so Transformice was already one year old.
The game is called Transformice because at first, mice were supposed to transform into crates and planks to let other mice cross gaps. Just like the "transform" maps you can see every now and then. We realized it wasn't much fun with few players, so we decided to make one mouse summon the objects, and called it the Shaman.
