Aghh! I love the style you used! The texture appears to be so smooth (which I honestly prefer, so it's more than amazing). I love how for my mouse you decided to ruffle up the hair a bit, since having it straight down (as it is in the ref) has gotten a bit cliche and wouldn't make much sense if she were to take off her hood after some time. Keep up the good work, I can't wait to see what you do next! |

I'd honestly do nothing differently to any other art teacher; I wouldn't let you draw anime and I wouldn't let you draw what you wanted; It would be a set curriculum beginning with still lifes and perspective lessons intermixed with technique seminars and, if I had months of your life to take away, eventually delve into gesture and form and a very in depth course of anatomy-- and thats only the meager level my own art stands at. If you think of everything that goes into art, the math of perspective and the biology of your subject and the physics of how the light renders it, whether in a reference or your own imagination, its easy to be overwhelmed. The only thing I can do without a Skype session would be to direct you to ProkoTV and Istebrak, they are both art teachers with hours worth of YouTube videos from which you can glean pretty much everything you'd need to know for now. The rest is up to you. * I recommend for ProkoTV to start with his very first introduction video by scrolling down his video list and then watch his videos in chronological order, because his channel is literally set up like an art class (except for his first five or so videos about noses and mouths, which are OK if you watch but not necessary to start with) *Every video of Istebrak is its own self contained lesson, and while she does a few introductions onto big topics, I recommend you just watch every Critique hour because you never know what you could learn. One video starts with composition and ends with character design, so if you're prepared to put in the time thats a fun way to learn and be exposed to many different kinds of artists while learning to master the fundementals. Disclaimer; there's a very specific reason why art teachers seem to hate anime (everyone watches anime) but its a complicated story for now. Separate your inspiration from your reference for the time being, and allow yourself to see the world in three dimensions-- where there are no lines and only edges. Drawing from art is never a good idea no matter if its anime or someone else's hyper-realistic sketch, its called data loss-- information decay. There's some really interesting science into this, but anyway; if you only draw to be able to draw anime then take a walk through some of the best anime artists and I guarantee they make the most amazing realism sketches and portraiture. Anime is art, sure, but you have to earn it first. Learning art isn't a fun thing to do and it's not supposed to be. A good thing is that you dont have to learn how to draw at all. Its really not for everyone. I heard you can improve by drawing what you love but I have no evidence of this phenomenon. If you boiled it all down, improvement is simply better control of three fundemental concepts, while Art is a synthesis of physics, biology (of the artist as much as the subject), and litterateur (an aspect forgotten but ever present). It kills me a little bit inside every time I return to the fact that the RGB color wheels on digita media programs dont compare to primary light color wheeles or have anything to do with color theory whatsoever. Imagine a digital program that could blend yellow and blue into green... Maybe in two hundred years when fundemental building blocks of computer engineering become obsolete and the world has largely moved away from the limitations of non quantum computing. *shakes fist at suboptimal human evolution* I heard rumors that yellows cones exist in some human eyes but I'm not going to promote eugenics or anything, at least in public. Its really cool and how entangled art is with human biology, its almost special in a way, almost like it's more than a means of getting a hundred notes on yumble. If you've ever wondered the meaning of art, I think now is the time to explain it. Every piece of art, no matter how ugly or pointless or stupid you think it is, has a message. Usually that message is, "This character is cool," or, "I drew this because I want someone to like me," or, "Please buy this product;" the key to art lies in the sophistication of what the art is able or intending to tell. Entire genres of art can be defined by the message that the producers and artists of the movements are trying to say-- the Dada movement, for the example, was trying to say, "Art doesn't mean anything!" Other movements suggested, "Art is the feeling welling in the forms and colors and light of the world and people around us," or, simply, "Damn it, we can make art better than this, guys." Its a fun past time of mine to prouse the forum and place the messages that artists are sending to the site. It is, of course, a lot of, "Please notice me," but that's okay. Thats what art is; a very complex means to a very simple end. I've always avoided placing a singular message over my own art, while a thousand reasons and suggestions arise as I create the thumbnails and move towards a final render, because the beauty of art is in the inherently subjective messages they tell. If you ever find yourself saying the same thing with your art over and over again, I believe this is the cause of why so many people get bored of art and do something else. It's like writing the same book with different characters each time, wouldn't that get repetitive? If you find yourself staring at a blank page or not able to draw, it may be that you have nothing to say. Its extraordinarily easy to find something to say when you realize what it is your art process has been missing-- warning, though, while doodling around can help jog ideas, it won't lead to improvement (though I've spoken on art improvement to great lengths already). Some things you can try in your art: Make a list of adjectives about your character you want to capture in the art Think of a feeling or mood you want to impress on an onlooker Think of a simple story, have your art capture a single still in the center of the action. Creating art that is meaningful isn't necessary, and neither is creating art that is beautiful, but having a loose structure or intention in mine before beginning a piece will hopefully keep you focused and interested in your work. I hope this discussion has opened your eyes a little bit to the vast waters of the art world, and helps you wet your feet a little. *All outstanding requests have been started but are not all finished just yet Dernière modification le 1495742520000 |
