Spacebar wouldn't be a good key to use since shaman objects being spawned get ghosted on that.

Maybe face the direction you want to project to and press "P"

I find it to be fairly easy to control once you get used to it.

how about holding space bar + double tap?

Control wise, why not just hold duck and double tap the direction. That is reasonable, as it will be more unlikely youll mistype or whatever, and it couldnt be that hard to implement one thing into one skill.
