801 because of our creator Atelier 801, it is because of hiom that all our transformice life is possible, so it makes sense to have a room dedicated to him... as for the story:

The room was made as a shrine to Atelier and to transformice itself, the background is set in medival times to show that this was why we have this game, because of the inventions that led up to this. Papile and Elise are roleplaying, and did you know elise was a wizard? she has a wand, and popile is a brave knight, with his button shield. They are like the guardian angels of the room, and they secretly are reporting to Atelier who is tarnishing his shrine.

Story 2; the more likely one:

The room is made as the trail for a new minigame, and they are testing it out to see people reactions to the map in general, or to see if they should change it. is there one mouse who seems to always be there? thats probably Atelier in disquise (or however u spell that XD).

Yep. The story about the mice when they died and stuff.
But apparently now they are just in room 801 to test out new items. I don't think the admins have any real mystery behind the mice.

Elise and Papaille were real mice that the TFM admins got when they first opened up Transformice. Sadly, Elise got an un-curable disease, and passed shortly in her sleep. Papaille passed away too, of which I believe to have been a brokenheart. In room 801, Papaille used to be crying by Elise's side as she slept next to him, but now they just stand there, and sometimes are used to test new items.
