I'm aware of what you were stating, but it's not not the fault of the user that those things bother them.

Yes but can there a be ban hammer for something as trivial as this? its pretty contrversal, i am not trying to sound cold hearted and say deal with it but its either that or use the ignore button, there is no universal lock that prevents bullying

To be honest

if your easily offended get off the internet and light your computer on fire like there was a spider on it, you cant avoid bullying aslong as you use the internet. everything is offensive in some way like Impure stated above it just depends on how the person takes it.

This reply is much different than what you're expressing now. You basically said anyone who is bothered by these things needs to get off the computer. I do use the ignore feature in these cases if a mod can/doesn't respond, however a note but rape jokes are mutable.

And that doesn't even take into account when the person doing the bullying doesn't limit it to only words. They'll purosely /watch you when it's their sham turn, tell others to do the same, then ice you as soon as they can. THEN get their buddies to do the same so you can't effectively play in the room in peace.
So even if the person is placed on /ignore they still get bullied.

Yes, the person being bullied CAN leave the room, but what guarantee do they have that the bully won't make an alt, track them down, and keep up this crap? (This is a bit extreme, but I've seen it happen twice with no repercussions for the bully, and the person being bullied just permanently quit Transformice because of it.)
And I know one person who purposely stays out of room 3 over on the EN2 server because of someone who routinely comes into that room JUST to bully this one person any time they enter.
Not. Fun.

I just saw this thread and it caught my eye.

I've been through about 2+ months of depression related to this game. I think that the people doing the harm think it's okay just because this is a game. I mean, sure it's a 'game', but there are real people playing it...and they have REAL feelings, it's not like shooting AI who don't care.

I hate how we all think we can pick on the weak or disabled, but that's how life is. Those people just need to learn to treat others the way they want to be treated.

I mean let's say there's this visually impaired person at your school/work and you saw people being mean. And you're friends with the VI person. What would you do?

Too many just sit by and don't even report them to moderators or tell someone.
**Granted, I used myself in the example, but I'm sick and tired of getting judged by what I am on the outside.

If people are newbies does that really mean they deserve disrespect just because they're new? I give respect to everyone because that's who I am as a person. Bullies just want attention. They're too lonely to ask for friends so they pick on others because that makes them feel better. I don't think I've bullied, but that doesn't mean I haven't.

Well we all have to ignore them just to get the bullied banned. I got offended by a racist guy who is calling me a "monkey" and he is banned after i left TFM for school. Even i'm not the only one who hates cyberbullying and none of the mods didn't told me to ignore them and i reported them. Even calling the ma "noob" could be very insulting since at the end of the year 2011.

Now when i see mice who insult shamans who sucks at the game there is no way i would report them. But hey, trolling is the part of the game. We all have different reasons and to the fact that trolling is still in the rules. There's no need to do this petition anyways.

Oh I did not know people have the right to make jokes about something as awful as rape and telling people to kill themselves! How silly of me!

People DO have the right to make jokes about whatever isn't outlined in the Guidelines and Rules. The actual rules about controversial chat like this is beyond ambiguous.

Rules a dit :
Remember, young children also play this game. Language which seems natural for you may not be suitable for them. If you wouldn’t say it in front of your mother you probably shouldn’t say it here!

All this "rule" really states is to try and be respectful, which isn't really a proper guideline that defines actual chat rules.

The topic of is it morally right is something completely different and not the topic of this thread.

I'm not condoning rape jokes or telling somebody to kill themselves on a flash game(or off the Internet, for that matter), but telling somebody that they do not have the right to do something that isn't specifically outlined in the rules of the game isn't correct.

As for OP's issue. I feel as though Whisky addressed your problem in an effective manner. If his explanation isn't to your liking, you can always offer your own suggestions about defining chat rules. Bullying is best avoided though through the /ignore command. If somebody is going so far as to make new accounts or make others insult you, then you should try whispering a mod rather than reporting. It's more direct, you can give them more information and they can offer you suggestions moving forward if this is a constant thing.

You're kidding, right? You're saying that if someone is being bullied and attacked then THEY are they ones who should change? That is so wrong; if someone is homosexual and people are bullying them for it, then it's the jerks who are attacking said person to change. The homosexual person should not change their sexual orientation just because people bully him/her for it.

Who says they have to change who they are? They just have to change how to deal with things. If a person who gets bullied comes up for him or herself, they are less likely to be bullied. And you know what happens when the bullies get forced to change? Well it become more fun for the bullies to bully the person. Also if I say change I don't mean become like the rest and leave the minority and join the many.

Well I would never tell people to get of the internet, since they will just create an isolated world again. A world where everything is fine and there is no one to hurt you. This would make them alien to the world, and you know when these people go outside their bubble? Yep, they get bullied/named/etc. It would not help them in any way.

Haruhitastic a dit :
Oh I did not know people have the right to make jokes about something as awful as rape and telling people to kill themselves! How silly of me!

Well to be honest people have all rights on the internet pretty much, this is a thing people assume. Since its over every country and people feel without identity, this causes them to assume there aren't any rules and everything is allowed. Although countries do try to enforce the law on the internet, but thats not in every country.

Now about rape and telling people to kill themselves. To some people these 2 words don't have that much meaning. Personal differences and cultural differences. For a kid rape might be a funny joke and all his friends laugh about it. Yet for someone who actually has gotten in the real situation, they will not be amused to the slightest and probably break out emotionally, and once someone breaks out emotionally and you are a kid with no responsability you will in terms bully that person even more. Same with trolling, bullying is fed with the displeasure of others and showing that you are superiour to someone.

Going onto this logic bullying/trolling has, people will find any way to displeasure or annoy you untill the point that they feel better as you. No matter how cruel the words are.

Around the subject of bullying is the entire self-esteem issue. I always compare this to a term I first heard in a series: equivalent exchange. With this I mean bullies sometimes feel just as bad as the person who is bullied. To feel better they take away the self-esteem from others to make themselves feel better, but in term the others self-esteem will drop. Finding a way to make people feel better about themselves or better than others without being so is the best way. This is actually a thing games have done, you might think bullying has increased over the past few decades, but in term it is true since we have become a more individual based society but games on the other hand have decreased bullying. Although it didn't actually decrease, this is because people still bully but they are less effected yet the bully still has the feeling of self-esteem.

Also with saying rape and killing yourself, you are now showing what can hurt your self-esteem. If someone would try to bully me about rape or killing myself, I would not be bothered the slightest. I probably laugh it off. Thus still people have to change the way they deal with bullies, ofcourse educating bullies about things will help slighty but they will find other things to pick on eventually. It is a cycle, you can't change others, but you can change yourself. Do not expect others to do what is better for you, the world is cruel, if others do what is better for you, be thankful.

That makes better sense, but I still have a problem with it. Not everyone has the strength or willpower to stick up for themselves and do something about the issue. Many times, especially when no one tries to help them, they feel singled out and attacked, especially when they constantly get bullied. So telling the bullied person to change isn't the best solution either, but thank you for clarifying that you didn't mean they should change who they are.

Yes, I do agree with this 200%. I know in Slavic countries, using homophobic slurs is more common because. Of course it's something that's never gonna change, but it'd be nice

People have known for yonks these things bother me haha. This is actually a good point and I thank you for elaborating on it, rather than just expressing that they need to change (ie: victim blaming).

For the sake of a good discussion, I just want to make a general point about victim-blaming, which Haru brought up. I still think there's a lot of victim-blaming going on around here. I think this was one of the reasons the OP was upset, as he pointed out that in a situation of legitimate bullying, often it's the person being bullied who is told to change. He and others have expressed the feeling that there are often limited to no repercussions for the bully, who actually did something wrong.

Think of it this way: If someone tells a horribly racist joke in room chat, his background isn't really taken into account. No one stops to consider the emotional status of the players in the room who might have been offended, or think about how society as a whole might teach them to deal with how to better laugh at racist jokes. That's because we know racism is wrong, and all of this stuff is kind of irrelevant and preposterous. The person telling a racist joke broke a rule, and faces consequences.

Likewise for bullying. If someone makes horrible rape jokes to a person over and over again, why are we wasting our time trying to figure out what that person did to deserve it or what that person could better do to deal with it? The person making the rape jokes is the person in the wrong here and should receive at least some of the focus, if not most of it, eh?

As for the person who said that chat rules aren't explicit enough and only state that we should be respectful, I think this should be common sense. It's just common sense to understand that telling people to kill themselves isn't respectful, and stating otherwise is just trying to find loopholes in the rules to get away with bad behavior.
