Calling it a "board" would get confusing with forum boards, so naming it something else to save confusion would go a long way. I do think this would be insanely useful though, not everyone checks every forum board for news and updates all the time and this would make things a lot easier for users.

Any feature like this would likely be managed by an administrator though, who use the Announcements forum board for this kind of thing anyway so wouldn't pose much extra use.
