Late reply, but: firstly did a quick sketch (see below). Proportions didn't really matter because he vectors can be changed easily anytime and don't got time for no anatomy. I then drew shapes over the sketch - there are no lines, all shapes are "fill" only (even the whiskers). Then there's lots of shape merging/clipping masks.
