ponydoll a dit : Venomous. Poison is ingested; venom is injected. That said, there's a few keelback and garter snakes that could kill you if you ate them. I want to work with vipers some day. Some day. |

My python don't want none unless you've got buns hun I'm not scared by snakes but i think i couldn't live near many of these reptiles, venomous or not ( everyone knows that anaconda-boa-python are not venomous but i don't want them to hug me ) But they are beautiful, good job :) I guess it needs many attention, food and space ? |

themousen a dit : Not really. They're fairly low maintenance and easy to keep. I'm not worried about hugs lol. It's when you're feeding them and they miss their food and bite/constrict you are when things get really dicey. And that's only if they're actually big. Most python and boa species are fairly small, weighing under 20 pounds. (20 pounds is about the weight of a full grown Boa constrictor. It's also how much my fat neutered tomcat weighs.) |

Ponydoll a dit : *cough cough* My favorite snake is the diamond-back rattlesnake, and it just to happens to be very poisonous. *cough cough* themousen a dit : The proper term for a 'snake hug' is 'constrict'. That's why these snakes are called 'constricters'. |

lilytenten a dit : Vipers should correctly be referred to as venomous. Poison is ingested; venom injected. Also, many snakes, including constrictors, will latch onto objects by wrapping around them just to hold on, like they would a tree if they were climbing it. Boa constrictors, rainbow boas and anacondas especially are known for having a strong grip. However, one should not panic; the only time there should be concern is if you were bitten and coiled after being mistaken for a rat or rabbit. That all aside, I'm hoping to get the proper training in the next year or so to eventually work with venomous pit vipers. Rattlesnakes and copperheads are something of a favorite of mine. Anyway, on another note, I got a new camera for Christmas! Specifically, a Nikon coolpix AW120. I would also like to take this chance to introduce everyone to another one of my pet projects: tadpole shrimp. These freshwater, primitive shrimps come from the temporary pools of the American Midwest deserts and grasslands. Their eggs have the ability to enter a suspended state that preserves the viable embryo on dry land for however long it takes for their pools to fill up with water once more, as the pools they are native to dry up completely and refill with seasonal rains. They'll wait however long it takes: one sample of eggs was found to still hatch even after 30 years of being stored on a shelf! Another notable factor about these shrimps is that they are, in fact, the oldest animal species still surviving on this planet - the primary species that evolved well before the Triassic has both survived and remained unaltered even now in modern times. And thanks to their methods of staying preserved in eggs that can be stored in a dry environment, one can very easily obtain this iconic species for themselves right through the mail. They have a lifespan after hatching of approximately 30 to 90 days, and they grow fast, reaching sexual maturity within the first two weeks. Some different species have longer lifespans and slower growth rates. The main species I currently keep are Triops longicaudatus. If you, like me, raised these things from little hobby kits when you were young, then congratulations, you had a cool childhood. :p WIthout further ado... Triops (tadpole shrimp): ![]() ![]() ![]() And now for the scales and tails... Julias: ![]() Nylah close-up: ![]() My still-yet-to-be-named crested gecko: ![]() ![]() I'm addicted to this camera, so expect more pictures very soon! I have yet to snap recent pictures of Boots and much of Julias, as they aren't fond of sitting still, ever, but that won't stop me. Also can't wait to photograph more tadpole shrimp shots as they get bigger, and get some shots of wild animals in the field. I'm also looking forward to document how Boa constrictors can change their colors. (Chameleons, while famous for it, aren't the only reptiles that change color. Boa constrictors, for one, change colors too, as does the crested gecko!) |

More Nylah photographs. This snake is a trip to photograph; she's perfectly fine chilling out more than long enough to shoot pictures and very calm. Unlike those pesky pythons. :B ![]() ![]() Meet my cat too. Her name is Mittens. If it says anything about the magical qualities of this camera, I took this picture at nighttime, in my room, with the lights off. ![]() Dernière modification le 1419561300000 |

Another shot. ![]() And, moments after... My fault. Boa constrictors have a fear of falling, so you have to be careful to support their weight and make them feel comfortable. That, I wasn't particularly doing, and was more focused on getting her unlatched from the fake plant I was using as a prop. This happened one second after I said "I'm going to get bit." Haha, called it! ![]() Dernière modification le 1419633960000 |
