just chiming in with my opinions re "gay" and "rape" as words.

I believe you should come down a million times harder with the word "rape" than the word "gay". I am extremely offended (and disappointed) when i see "rape jokes" and tfm is RIFE with them. I've been systematically ignoring anyone i see using this word, but I'm told the ignore list can only hold 500 names so i fear very soon I'll simply have to witness this sickening humor.

(thankfully) there are no more laws in my country around homosexuals. And "gay" is a term both used by them in a non offensive way, and against them in an offensive way, so context must be taken into account when policing this.

the word "rape" i feel is totally different. there ARE laws around rape, rape is NOT A JOKE. There is pretty much absolutely no reason anyone should use this word in any context in this game. the only reason I could think of would be if someone was talking to a friend about a genuine incident that happened to them, and if that's the case they wouldn't do that in a public place anyway, they'd keep it to PMs, trust me, i know. the ONLY context i have ever seen this in is either 1) someone "threatning" someone with rape because they have displeased them in some way (bad shamming etc) or friends saying how much they love eachother and would/want to rape eachother.

lets address these separately. 1) - these people should be muted for using one of the most offensive words in an obviouls malicious way, simple.

2) these people do not intend to offend, and assume no-one in the room is offended. I belive they should be given some kind of warning that states they need to use a different word. If people like eachother and there is consent rape is simply the wrong word to use. They could substitute it with f**k or someting. I think simply educating these people would be enough. I see things like "oh baby i love you, i wanna rape you" and the other person saying "oh you could rape me all day long". Clearly both parties are not offended, but outsiders ARE. I get what you say about letting parents do the parenting, but we do need to draw the line somewhere.

I can serouisly think of no context where the word "rape" would be appropriate on this game. It should be a word that earns you a mute. I don't know what I am going to do when I fill my ignore list up and have to be exposed to this specific word. It may even put me off playing completely.

also, something i've always always thought should be a thing here is the ability to minimize the chat completely. I'm not here to socialize, i'm here for the cheese and the physics. I'm often told to "just ignore the chat box" but it's hard to not flick my eyes down there and read what's been posted when i'm waiting for the next round to begin. If i had the option of turning chat off completely rather than having to ignore every single person that offends me as soon as they do i would enjoy this game so much more

This a gazillion times. But I've been informed by an ex-staff member admins have no plans to change how rape jokes are handled and will only punish if the word is targeted at someone in a...malicious...way....
Oh wait.

I've unintentionally proved that this kind of punishment CAN and IS handed out. So just swap it so homophobia mutes and bans are only if they're targetted towards people maliciously. Problem solved.

i do feel the word "rape" should have a blanket-mute procedure. they could even have it automatic surely? as for targeting someone maliciously having to be "proved" for admins to intervene. That makes me very disappointed with the staff :( surely they know the meaning of the word? non consensual sexual acts forced on someone, maliciously....

my friend suggested i start playing in a foreign server so all the language is nonsense to me. i'm considering doing this, it seems the only option i'll have once my ignore is filled


*EDIT* just checked the guidlines on the chat and i'm disappointed to see while discriminatory things are not allowed (racism, sexism, homophobia etc) there is nothing surrounding rape or rape jokes. So they really are breaking no rules :(

I have my doubt and my points of agree with things which have been said above, but I don't think calling yourself gay deserve a ban, things like "I'm gay" doesn't deserve a mute for 5 hours. I also agree that borders of what can and can't be said should be written down somewhere clear, and I also think it shouldn't make LGBT+ feel like outsiders in this game for who they are, there are many words who might be called inappropiate, but the word "gay" as solo word, not attached to anything else, shouldn't get you muted in any way.

And I know it might be inappropiate to say, but it's not like it's not known who has muted me for "using homophobic slurs towards myself".

Will there be sanctions for autism jokes? As it seems to be the go-to insult when racism or homophobia seem too old-fashioned.

I'd say they count as discrimination so there should be acording to the guidelines

If I recall correctly, we/the staff treated that word and its variations like the N/F words, in the past.

Well, opinions can often be deduced by the way people say things. A lot of people I talk to wouldn't openly call themselves sexist, maybe because its self-implied or people don't like talking about it. I believe different genders have a different purpose in humanity; one can't exist without the other. The main concept of gays and lesbians is that they are alike and thus a sexist person cannot support gays and lesbians. Individually, I think there is no problem in loving anyone you want except when people talk about gays they associate it with other things, not sure if this is true or not is probably the reason why I don't view gays as kindly as normal people - however this doesn't mean I insult or ignore them. So basically, we can say that the opposite of sexist is gay. In this case a lot of people will be considered as gay but not openly gay, otherwise there would be no reason to support sexism. My point is that with people striving forward sexist and gay views, we are getting nowhere... I just had to say that because I watched a video on a promoting non-sexist views by Emma Watson at school.

I haven't read the points above when I found this but I just randomly clicked on the first topic I saw and it provided a link to this. I thought this area was only for staff, or is it for staff to see and answer? Oh also after reading the comments above, when people are my age they enjoy reading these words and once they get a hold of them they won't stop using them. Being someone who does not prefer to use the lower class language doesn't mean one can avoid it. Its quite common to see swearing when you start to get older, sure it is an insult but you might as well get use to it as most of the people I know who swear often don't intend it without knowing its true meaning - this aspect undermines the whole point of insulting someone if you don't know what it means. These problems have occurred before the internet, the internet makes it wide-spread meaning that children can learn it simultaneously with adults when for example a new insult is created.

I guess I'm sorry if it was really long, I just needed somewhere to express my opinions.

Edit: Also forgot to say, one time my friend was banned due to homophobic language, so I guess it is possible. They told me that there was nothing wrong with what they said but I wasn't there to spectate it. If anything creating a ban on the word 'gay' solely will just cause an outbreak within the game itself. People need to understand that its not an insult but a term - Not sure if I can use it correctly or not so people might need to be educated in these kind of relationships as I guess that is the main issue, a lack of understanding.
