I think we're kind of aware of how Fanarts works. What we're discussing here is partially how to organize it better.
Let's face reality, right now Fanarts is a gigantic clusterfuck. Because there is no "sub"forum options like on vBulletin (which had separated videos into it other forum), we are stuck with this unless either

- Rules change
- New forums are created for fanfiction, contests, et cetera.

Since some communities don't even have a page full of fanart nonetheless the issue we are experiencing, then the latter is not an option (the same reason why the Fanfic forum was denied for BR).
I think the following things should occur:

- Contests should be eliminated entirely, or be strictly at the call of a sentinel. We don't need seven contests with prizes by the same artists running around.
- Fanfiction should all be in one thread and use flags, deviantArt, or another fiction site to host it.
- Although undecided on this given the fact this rule has existed since late 2010-early 2011, I don't think you should be allowed a request thread AND a gallery thread.
- I really think a request limit needs to be put in place, hence why I suggested one.

Also of games, the only game in Fanarts IS Draw the Mouse Above You.

From the points above I agree with Haru that contests should not be run by normal users but staff members. Mod-held contests tend to be a lot more organized and they usually don't turn into a drama fight or the organizer abbandoning the contest completely. Contests would become something more special to users and since it would be a staff run event, they'd most likely get better prizes. As long as the Atelier801 is okay with it (And sents are interested in it), the forum staff could make small contests within their communities.

I do not mean to offend anyone that likes to organize contests every so often. Some of them are good and end well, but it's not a rule.

edit: And what I forgot to say is that there may be people in the community that are good at running a contest but it's either all or no users.

However, I am unsure if I understood the second point correctly but I disagree with the idea that fanfiction should be in one thread. I think if the fanfiction is long enough and takes several posts to finish it (and the writer is going to update the thread with new chapters), they should be allowed to make separate threads for separate fan fictions. I think it would get quite messy if you'd mix up fictions into one thread.

Agreed.
Plus when people are trying to praise, it would be extremely confusing. Better it have it seperately by one thread per author.

Before this forum the only art contest I remember ever being held was by Melibellule.

I agree with sabs
there was this other contest that I was at and no offense to the person who made it but it was kinda unorganized
I'd prefer if staff were the ones/members with purrrrmission to do so to make contests and not just 8 year olds who start drama

not saying that people who create contests are 8 year olds who start drama but..
it's just some people 'round these forums
you know who you are

I agree greatly with this because at one point on a different forum I was trying to handle 3 fanfictions (which ended up as a huge mess in the OP)

Just going to say that another five? competitions have popped up today and only two seem properly organized. Please. Please. Do something about it. Before Fanarts has to be renamed to Fanart Contests.

As it turns out, I unknowingly posted my thoughts in a copied thread. So for the sake of keeping the discussion in one place (and since the other thread will inevitably be locked) I'll simply quote what I said there.

Lemodile a dit :
To be honest, I stopped checking the fanarts subforum a long time ago (making my opinion largely irrelevant, I know), largely because of the spammy impression it gives off. However, I don't think there ever was such a thing as 'the old ways' in this respect. Fanarts always has looked a bit spammy to me.

I do think this is a good time to be bringing it up, with the new forums coming up and all. Maybe that's a good time to become a bit stricter. Things like requesting in non-request threads already is against Fanart Subforum Rules. They just need to be enforced a bit stricter if you see this happen too often.

One other idea, that would definitely get me back to checking Fanarts. The subforum could easily be more organized.. Fanarts in its current form can (and imo should) be divided into Fanfiction, Fanart and "Tools, Tips and Requests" or some other division. Personally I don't care for fanfiction much, but love a good drawing.

I don't see what the problem is Transformice doesn't have an age restriction but yes, i agree fan art sub forum threads should be more properly organized.
