Chapter three part three

Derrin grimaced as he neared the building where the meeting was going to take place. He already knew things were getting tense, and to add to that irritating knowledge, he suddenly sensed another presence that stood out strongly from the rest of the agents. He cringed. It was Reline Hazer. He didn't know why she was so visible compared to the others, but as he ran the thought over in his mind it was probably because she took a lot of interest in him, well more like an interest in Shadows Gleam. She'd always give his horse sugar cubes or strawberries when he came back to Transformice, and yet, she always acted so suspicious and wary of everything accept with newer agents.

This was only one of the many things that confused him when it came to her. He remembered that she started out really nice and friendly when she first met him, as though she expected them to be best buddies that very instant. Of course Derrin hadn't liked that either, but in some ways he preferred it to how she acted now. Which happened out of nowhere too, and after that she'd grow more distant and suspicious with each day that passed. Derrin found out a few weeks later that she did this with everyone, and he couldn't figure out why which bugged him like a fly buzzing at his ear. He liked knowing things, which was why he traveled and explored so much of the world outside Transformice, in order to know more.

Reline pretty much ruined all of that! How could he claim to know so much when he couldn't figure out the actions of a subordinate? It was ludicrous!

At least with Reline though, it was interesting. With everyone else it just irritated him, he did not want to talk, he did not care about someone leaving cat stickers all over the offices and prisons after visiting them, and he did not want to get a drink of coffee. Why he had to come here and suffer with these noisy mice was beyond him, but he had to come this time. And so, with that in mind his resolve renewed and he entered the building.
It was large and open, and faintly resembled a school gym. Derrin saw mice leaning against walls, chatting like nothing was wrong. How stupid could these agents be? They had been called to an important meeting, not a get together! He groaned inwardly and didn't bother to hide his displeasure when he glanced around the room. Newer recruits who saw him started, and stood staring at Shadows Gleam and his rider with a quiet awe. The older ones who had been around for a longer time looked up at him once and made sure to keep out of his way, and the ones who had been there even longer (or were just plain stupid/oblivious) walked straight up to him and said hello.
One of these was a mouse named Ace. Derrin didn't understand why he always bothered him, much like how he didn't understand why Reline insisted on bothering him despite her suspicious attitude. Ace usually didn't talk a lot, and at first Derrin thought he wouldn't have to worry about him, but he was wrong. When he'd first met him everyone assured him that Ace wouldn't be a bother. What a bunch of liars He thought bitterly, remembering the first thing the black haired mouse had done was smile and talk to him, at great length. This had surprised others as much as it had him, and Derrin noticed a few of the female agents staring at Ace almost longingly, which caused him to grimace in disgust. Of course the mouse they were actually staring at ignored the expression and continued to try and talk to Derrin. Why? He had no clue. Derrin knew he wasn't a pleasant person, in fact he thought of himself as a downright jerk and thoughtless dingbat, so why would anyone bother talking to him?

Derrin grunted, clenching his teeth together in frustration as Ace strode over to greet him. He decided that if he had to suffer this he might as well dismount and feed Shadows Gleam. He quickly got off the horse and led it toward a strange structure with a wooden door, a net full of hay on one wall, and a wooden box full of wheat and other grains on the other, not to mention the strange piles of clean hay on the wooden floor. Derrin led his steed into the stall and carefully unsaddled him and hung up his harness and other riding gear on iron hooks that stuck out beside the hay net. Ace had followed him and was leaning on the lower half of the split wood door, staring at Shadows Gleam.

"He's a strange thing." He said softly, watching with an almost curious look on his face. Derrin grunted, letting him know that he acknowledged his presence. Sighing, he stopped what he was doing and turned toward the blonde haired mouse. He obviously wanted or needed to say something, so Derrin just wanted him to hurry and say it.
"Well, what is it?" He crossed his arms and glowered at him.

Ace put on a puzzled and irritated frown "We're still missing some people. Con and Warren haven't showed up yet." Before Derrin could reply the doors to the building were thrown open and a brown blur sped through the opening shouting "WE'RE HERE! WE'RE HERE! HI GUYS! HELLO! YAY WE MADE IT, DID WE MISS THE MEETING? HI HELLO!"

I love all the characters so much....so much

Well this took longer than needed eheh, no it's not a chapter (sorry!) but it is that backstory I promised you! I'm sorry for taking so long to finish it, just lost inspiration for awhile but got tired of not working on anything related to this fanfic so i finished. Just want to say thank you sohotomi for giving me an idea of what Ace's backstory was like.

Hope you guys enjoy :D (and I'll attempt to start the next chapter in a few days, I willll)
Ace

Ever since Ace was little he was made fun of, laughed at, pushed around. All because of the clothes he wore, because of where he lived, because his father wasn't around. Even because he had to take care of his four younger siblings while his mother lay in bed, desperately clinging to life. Why were mice so cruel? Couldn't they understand that he barely held things together? Barely kept his family alive? No, nobody understood, nobody who lived near him at least. The mice in his town were heartless monsters that feasted on the ill luck of others who weren't as well off as they were. Poor Ace was their favorite target.

Ace hated being different, hated that he was poor, most of all, he hated being weak. All he wanted was to fit in, was that too much to ask? He tried multiple tactics, but none of them worked. Every attempt was just thrown back in his face, leaving him in a worse situation than he was in before. Until one quiet day when he was sitting with his little brother, who scraped his knee after tripping over a stone in the path. His brother was crying and so to make him laugh Ace told a joke in a goofy sounding voice while making a silly face. To his surprise, more than one mouse laughed.

He spun around to see who the laugh belonged to, and stood still when he saw a young mouse his age looking at him, still laughing from his earlier comedic act. Ace recognized him from the more popular crowd, and instantly tensed up, ready to grab his brother and dart out of there. When he just kept laughing and didn't come after them Ace slowly slid back into his previous stance.

"Why aren't you coming after me?" He asked, wary and confused by this strange behavior. This question made the other mouse finally control his laughter.

"I'm not one of the mice who stoop to chasing people, that's probably why. That and the fact that even if I did I would be laughing too hard to go after you, I nearly choked because of that act." Ace was flabbergasted. Funny? Him? Since when was he funny? Wait, he was funny enough to keep one of the upper-class kids from going after him, but not only that. He was funny enough to get a rich kid to talk to him without that stuck up sneer in their voice!

Since that day Ace became the 'class clown', and the rich kids didn't chase him anymore but instead let him hang out with them, laughing at his jokes and crazy antics. Although Ace had to make sure there were plenty of jokes and comedic actions for each day he felt it was much better than what he dealt with before, and he really enjoyed fitting in. The mouse who first laughed at his jokes was named Jake, and they became fast friends. They grew very close and Ace, without realizing it, had shared all his personal life sufferings with his careful and happy friend.

His reputation grew rapidly, making him a star among the children in his hometown. This was great except for one thing, he was running out of material. Ace didn't get to reuse jokes unless they were requested, and only about twenty different jokes were repeated on a constant basis. One day he decided to do something that would keep mice talking for a long time after it had occurred. He set it up, got it ready, and a crowd of eager mice watched, waiting for the new stunt to be performed. He sat on top of a hill in a rickety old wagon, watching the scene below. A group of kids were at the bottom of the slope and his friend Jake held one end of the finish line, and had the other on a whistle in his mouth, ready to signal for Ace to go.

The whistle sounded, and he raced down the steep incline! He was being banged all around, the rocks and indents in the hill's side threw his wagon side to side and sometimes shot it a few feet into the air. This was a bad idea, a very stupid idea, and he'd realized it the second he started heading down. He was going too fast, he couldn't stop. "JAKE GET OUT OF THE WAY!" He shouted, trying to lean the wagon in the other direction, but it refused to move from its path. Jake didn't move in time, with a loud clash he was hit and Ace was flung out of the wagon, rolling a few feet in the dirt before finally stopping long enough to shakily get to his knees.

His gaze carried over to where Jake lay, what he saw made his blood run cold. Jake was slumped on the ground, a bloody heap of fur and bones, his ears and tail still twitching with shock. "JAKE!" Ace shouted, attempting to scramble over to him, but was held back by the other mice in the area while one of the adults picked his friend up and took him to the hospital. He swung around at the kids holding him, struggling free himself from their grasps "Please! Let me go, I have to make sure he's alive, please!" they shook their heads.

"Ace, you can't even walk."

After the incident Ace visited Jake every day, making sure he was okay, that he was getting better. Jake had a fractured skull and some broken ribs, but the doctors said that he would make a full recovery. This news made everyone really happy, Ace however, still felt the crushing guilt for being responsible for being the one who put him in the hospital in the first place. Since the crash he hadn't talked to anyone, he'd walk around with a ghostly look in his eyes and had no words to say to anyone, no matter how much they tried to get him to tell a joke or to say hello. He became mute, he stopped doing his stupid pranks and stunts, and he told no more jokes. That was all behind him, he didn't hang out with the cool kids anymore, he didn't hang out with anybody.

He disappeared from the town, from their minds, even though every day he could be seen, no one saw him. Ace was gone, and he was glad. At least now he wouldn't hurt anyone else because of his stupid, selfish desires.

HEY GUYS I'M BACK

IT'S BEEN AGES

LIKE SERIOUSLY AGES

BUT HERE'S NEXT CHAPTER PLS DON'T KILL ME FOR LATENESS
Chapter four

Con stood in the doorway and watched Warren bolt around the large room, trying futilely to understand how he could have so much energy. Was driving so slow making him go crazy? she wondered as she entered the building, pulling the door shut behind her. A crash sounded, making Con wince before looking toward the source of the disturbance. Warren had knocked over some of the many oak-wood chairs, speeding away while other agents set them up again, glaring the whole time at his blurry form as it flew by.

Crossing her arms, she sent a frosty glare in his direction, taking in the chaos. "WARREN, SIT DOWN." Con shouted suddenly, stomping one foot on the ground she brought her arms to her sides and balled her hands into fists. Warren skidded to a stop and looked at her, his head tilted downward guiltily. Con watched, impatiently tapping her foot as he ran hastily to a chair and sat down, folding his hands together like a school boy who's trying his best not to get into trouble. Which, is pretty much the case. Con thought, and shook her head slightly.

Taking a deep breath she strode over, and sat down next to him. The other agent's stares lingered, mildly startled by Warren's quick reaction to the order. "What? Surprised?" Con said "You could've tried it. Can we just start now? I'm tired of waiting." She watched as they began shuffling around once more, before quietly relaxing into her seat. At least they're doing something with their time besides stare.. She thought, sighing again. Warren tilted his head at it but Con just shrugged it off, saying "Let's try and focus on the meeting."

-

Ten minutes later everyone who was not going to speak had taken their seats, and the meeting had begun. Con sat alert, looking intently at the wooden structure, worry gnawing at the back of her mind. What bad news will they have in store this time... She wondered, looking at the steely faces surrounding her. I guess they're thinking the same thing. Minutes passed, tense and quiet, when the sharp sound of metal soled shoes clicking across the cement floor could be heard making its way toward the stage. Glancing to her left, Con caught sight of Agent Eyher making her way to the circular stage platform.

Stepping onto the stage, Agent Eyher accepted the microphone offered by another Sentinel, exchanging some quick words before he ran off to do whatever he was told, and left her there to give some important information to a crowd of wound up mice. Con watched, her heart beating rapidly as Agent Eyher began speaking. Why isn't a mod up there? "I'm afraid what you will all be learning, those who don't know this already, will be unpleasant knews." Con gritted her teeth; Knew it. "Recently reports of missing agents have been growing in number. This past week alone we've lost five of our comrades to unknown enemies, with little to no knowledge of what happened to them. This isn't all that we've been getting, no the office has also received reports of newer and more dangerous hacks and cheats being sold in the Black Markets, their use is being noticed all across Transformice by locals and undercover agents patrolling those areas. One of our Sentinels, Agent Con, interviewed a cheat dealer who was specializing in a new kind of hack. She managed to get some important information before the dealer attacked her mind, causing her to collapse. She's alive and well thanks to the quick action of Agent Petricoft, and our well beloved medical team." A small round of relieved sighs went around before quieting under the raised hand of Agent Eyher.

"Thanks to the information gathered we have an idea of the atrocities that lay ahead, but we don't have nearly enough to combat it. This led to a very difficult debate. In the end we had to make a hard decision, but it was the only one that would give us anything to help prevent whatever future catastrophe that awaits us. The Admins themselves agreed that this was the best possible way to continue. We have data on many criminals but we don't know them all and we don't know the ultimate ringleaders. In order to fix this, we have to get help, from one of them."

An instant wave of gasps and outraged mutterings exploded in the room. A young mouse with gray fur and wavy blond hair partly covered by a dark gray police cap with a matching tie stood up, raising his hand. "Quiet! This is obviously the result of many meetings and ideas, do you honestly think they haven't thought this through? If the Admins say this is what they want us to do, we do it! No questions asked!"

Con stood up quickly, annoyed by all the by all the angry rambles "He's right, besides not like it's not the end of the world!" after her outburst she slowly sank back down into her chair, and waited for everyone to be quiet and the meeting to continue. The murmurs died down soon, and Agent Eyher took a deep breath before staring again into the crowd of agents. "We're going to bring him out here to introduce to you, he's not the biggest dealer out there but he has the incredible knowledge that we need. He can gather information in seemingly no time at all, this is why we want him as an aide." Turning around she motioned to a couple of sentinels at the back of the stage. They nodded, walking out of site to retrieve the prisoner, or "aide" as they called him.

While they disappeared to fulfill their order, she turned back to the crowd "When he's on stage there are to be no questions. He's only here so that you might learn to recognize his face, in case he betrays us at some point in the future, so you all know who he is. He'll come on for a couple of minutes then go back, after that we will discuss other matters."
