Christmas is culturally Christian, it doesn't mean that others don't celebrate it too, it can be celebrated as a cultural or a religious event. I know if you're Christian in Indonesia you still enjoy the Eid al-Fitr (Lebaran) celebrations, it is a public holiday, there are fireworks the night before, there is feasting, people wear traditional dress and it is about unity and respect for your family, and remembrance for lost loved ones. It is very little different from Chinese New Year or Diwali, which again can be religious holidays but anyone can enjoy the celebrations! I think Ramadan itself is purely a religious concept, only people of the Islamic faith consider it a holy month, so it probably shouldn't have an event itself. Essentially, whilst Christmas, Eid, and Diwali are religious holidays, they are also cultural events that can be enjoyed by and celebrated by anyone, so there is no reason why people should be offended by these things and no reason this isn't something that can be discussed. Obviously if the discussion turns to religious debate, we may have a problem. |
